    host file redirecting.....
    « on: February 01, 2011, 11:36:40 AM »
Hi... i could do with a little help please  :)

My friends pc had a virus, i think it was called(internet security 2011)

so i ran malware bytes on it to remove it.... it found about 760 infections, i removed them and all looked well....

couple of days later i had to come back to it, because the internet was redirecting them and was sluggish...

so i ran spybot and it found the problem straight away.... it was in the host file!!

when i tried to remove the infections it was saying access denied or along them lines...

when i looked for the host file it wasnt there...

so i ran nosts xpert that found the file, but when clicked on make writeable nothing happened and it was in red!!

i can see the problem in notepad i just cant change it!!!

i would be very great full if some one could guide me through this one please....

i also have logs from spybot, hijack this and nosts xpert if it helps...

    thank you  :)

    Allan

What OS are you using? if you're using Windows Vista or 7, you have to turn off UAC before you can make edits to the host file.

      Since when?

You just have to run your editor as the administrator (notepad, or whatever)

even as the run as admin active, UAC will block you from editing the host file. I've done this on many vista and 7 machines, and they tended to have a rogue or something.
