Go to the manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostics tools for your drive and run it. Before doing that you might try seeing if the cable is seated properly and/or trying another cable to the drive. truenorth

I tried your advice, Allan, but it didn't work. As for Truenorth, I built my computer, so do you mean the manufacturer or my harddrive or what?

Windows 7. And how do I download the diagnostic tools if my computer won't work? Should I just download it to a USB, and then when it asks me if I want to use a certain drive just use it?

You download it on another system, burn it to cd, and boot to it.

Sorry, but just to be sure, I go to my manufacture for my harddrive, correct? If so, i'm not very sure what the manufacture of my harddrive is. Looking at the harddrive itself, it says "WD Cavier Green", but I'm not sure. I guess I'll need to look at it more, but you want me to get the diagnostic tools for my harddrive, correct?

Thanks for all the help so far :P

actually, I have a question. I got the files onto my USB, but after reading the tutorial, I think it expects my computer to be running and all. How do I make the register tools work if my computer won't go to windows? I changed the BIOS system setup so it goes to usb on first setup, but it says "Boot error". What do I do? Thanks :P

                Get this version:  http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&sid=30&lang=en
                Burn image from iso file.
Boot CD in machine to be tested.  Make sure boot order is CD before HDD.

This is probably a stupid question, but should I download the .iso or the .zip or both?

Okay, thanks for all the advice so far. I want to try your advice with the iso, but I need an image burner. The one person did give me a website, but the iso burner wasn't free. Can someone please give me one that I can actually trust, because I don't want to go on the internet and look for one randomly and get a virus.

Just a word here, I may be wrong but I d/loaded Data Lifeguard to check my HDD, and it did not work. It seems it is not compatible with Win 7 OS. I followed the link just now & this appears to be verified in the list of OSs supported. Hope I've not transgressed any rules.

Not at all, appreciate your input. But the version we are talking about is a bootable version. You burn the .iso file to cd and the system boots to that cd. It is irrelevant what OS you are running because this is essentially a DOS utility that runs outside of the OS.

Thank you guys again for being so helpful! So, I burned the diagnostic tools to a CD and booted it. It took a few minutes, but it said to report the following message:

                        Command Error
                        Error/Status Code: 0132

Any idea what that means? Also, after that it tells me to press any key, and when I do, it gives me a message that says

                        Cannot load the file A:\Command.com
Insert Correct disk and Strike any key

Any ideas? I didn't know what the message meant, so I thought it was something missing on the disk, so I got a new one a burned all the .iso back onto it, but got the same messages again.

                          Don't see that 1 listed...

Nice website :) I found it though

132   Command Error   Command Aborted. Please ensure that you are using the version of diagnostic utility corresponding to either newer or older Western Digital drives.

I guess the diagnostic tools I was using were out of date somehow. Anyone have an updated one?

Did I say IDE? I have SATA I believe, and that's where I find it:

                            http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&lang=en

By the way, what should I download? Looking ait the downloads it says it doesn't support Windows 7? What should I do?

I'm sorry to bump my thread, but I really need help and my computer hasn't worked at all since I made this topic. What software will work for the windows 7?

The ISO version creates a bootable CD which is independent of the installed OS.  The ZIP version contains the same iso file as the ISO download.  The latest diagnostic tools should work on any older drive, so don't know what the problem is.

I understand that, but then why do they have this under the download?

I don't know, ask WD.  But they probably won't know either.
