    Need settings for FireFox
    « on: March 13, 2011, 05:48:43 PM »
    Hello,
Am using FireFox and am mostly pleased for my browsing and work.

There are apparently some settings that need tweaked and I hope to get some guidance here on the forum.

    1. Everything I download has to go to a floating window called downloads [in my documents] (here, I would like the download popup that allows me to choose destination aka IEx)
    2. If I click on a .pdf, FF wants to install my .pdf reader each time, even though it is already installed.

As it is now, I oped IEx and do my downloads and .pdf viewing, then back to FF for browsing. Juggling between to browsers.

Hope I was able to convey my situation....

    John

    Hi John,

In firefox, go to the options menu (click tools, then options from FF's menu bar), make sure you have "Always ask me where to save files" checked, as shown in screenshot below. This way, firefox should always prompt you for a specific location to save your files you wish to download.

What software are you using as your pdf reader? I have used adobe reader and foxitreader and both work fine on my pc with the firefox browser. Give them a try and see if one seems happy with your pc and firefox

Good luck, let us know how it goes :)

      2X35iX,

Thanks for the reply! I am using Foxitreader and it is a great program.

Thank you, also, for the setting change!

Just what I wanted to know,

      John

        Even better!

Under OPTIONS > APPLICATIONS I found that Foxitreader was NOT selected as the preferred application. I selected it and problem solved!

yeah, it seemed that pdf files were not registered to be opened by any pdf reader by default. Probably that why computer keep prompting you to install one  :) Guess you're all set?

What's a "floating window"?  Do you mean the small Firefox window that opens when a download is initiated?

I leave my Firefox set to download to the Downloads folder.  It seems like a logical place to put them.  If I want to move a particular file to another folder, I can do that later.
