    Help with .phw files please
    « on: March 21, 2011, 06:07:12 AM »
    Hi everyone.

I have some files on a dvd that have the .phw extension.  When i looked this up on the net i find that they are PhotoWebber files.  I cannot find any way of opening theses files.  Has anyone come across them or does anyone know how I can open them?  I don't have the program PhotoWebber.  I have tried changing the extension but no program can read them.  The files are quite large which makes me think they are video, but changing the extension to .ave etc doesn't work.  One file is 641,520 kb.  Can anyone please help me to open these .phw files?  Best wishes, Ray

Hi thanks for your reply.  I have tried to open these .phw files with photoshop, but it doesn't recognise them.   Any other ideas?  I'd be grateful for any help to open these files.  Thanks, Ray

Maybe do a Google search for a free\trial  download of PhotoWebber.  It appears to be the only program able to view the .phw files.

When I have this type of problem, I usually open the file in a hex editor and look at the first two to three bytes to determine the type of file. You can then type those letters into google and find out what the file is.

You can get a free hex ed here: http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

The file type has already been determined here...

Yes, but I don't think the right type was determined. It doesn't seem right that a photo program would produce a 641MB file.

How do you know ? ?
It could be a slideshow presentation...if you've ever worked with Photoshop files you'lld be aware of some pretty large file sizes...

It doesn't seem right that a photo program would produce a 641MB file.

Why not? That is a ridiculous thing to write. Anyhow, Photowebber phw files are "session files". These are project files containing many images. The project files are a lot like *.WMM (Windows Movie Maker) files, in that they both are project files that can be converted to other file types in the host software. In other words, you would open a WMM file in Windows Movie Maker in order to compile that project file into an AVI or whatever format you want. It's the same with Photowebber, only instead of compiling a video format, it converts the project into a web page. So the final web page might be quite small but the project file containing the original media to be processed could be a good deal larger.
