Downloaded Ubuntu to my Laptop and am trying to make a bootable cd to load on my new desktop. brand new build and need to add OS to start using. I dont have a Microsft office disk so I am going this route. So how do I make a bootable disk and more so what file do i need to find as the boot image? I dont have a 1.44 floppy disk so that option is out.

You downloaded an .iso file, right?  You need to burn it to CD but it needs to be burned in a specific way that expands/extracts the image so you have usable files on your disc.  In other words, some popular burning programs such as Nero may not work.  I suggest ImgBurn for this.

The "iso" files that downloaded are.

      isolinux.bin

there are no .iso files. i donwloaded it from the site. I went to imgburn but dont know which program to download. There were a couple- download to chrck hardddrive, download to convert to mp3, ect. which one do I use?

Even when I make the disk bootable. I am not sure which file I need to click to make the disk bootable. The only two "boot" images are

      isolinux.bin
      sbm.bin

If I need to choose a different file I can, but I am unsure which file it is.

Where did you get those files?  You need an .iso file, a file ending with .iso.  For example, you could download ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

To get ImgBurn, select a Mirror download site from http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

i got those files from the same lin you gave me but I downloaded the 10.10 version and not th 10.4. I assumed the 10.10 would be better and have a few more features and kinks worked out.

Get version 10.10, 10.04LTS, or whatever you want.  The point is that you need a .iso file, not a .bin.

As stated earlier, you need a ISO burner.

Ok. I got imgburn and got the disk to boot in the new system. I get to the screen where it says

                  Try Ubuntu without installing
                  Install Ubuntu
                  Check Disk for defects
                  Test memory
                  Boot from first hard disk

                  F1 Help F2 Language F3 Keymap F4 Modes F5 Accessibility F6 Other Options

I clicked Install Ubuntu and it went to a black screen with a blinking line and that was it. Reset and got same screen and clicked Checck disc for defects and the same thing happened.

Roxio should do it, too.  Look for menu item something like "Burn image" to disk, not copy file to disk.

I will download another version. Would you be willing to tell me how you burned the disk? Did you simply select the zip file as the image file or did you build it with the zip as the image and add the ubuntu files?

You have to use the ISO-burner to burn an ISO.

There is nothing to unzip. the file you receive is an ISO. you "unzipped" the iso. you aren't supposed to. You are supposed to burn it. There is nothing to unzip.

Yes. I corrected that mistake. I burnt 3 different cd's using the ISO file as the image on imgburn. none of the cds are working.

Well, clearly you are doing something wrong. What files are on one of those CDs?
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

You can use CD-RW discs on almost all modem CD drives.
I have a large collection of Linux CDs that I may never use again. Not to mention the ones I burnt and forgot to label.
Also, some distros will let you use a USB flash drive.

there is a procedure used for verifying the integrity of the download.  hash verification.  most of the time (but not always) they give the md5 or sha256 at the ubuntu website.  using the command line terminal in linux you can 'examine' your downloaded iso to see if it's corrupt.  you can use a tool called 'hashcalc' if you're using windows.

it sounds to me like you have a good disk because you get to the screen where you choose to install, run memtest, or try ubuntu.  when hardy heron came out, i could install it on every computer i own and they all booted every time and worked very reliably.  something happened by the time karmic koala came out, because most of my computers at THAT time (running karmic koala) had display problems (i would install and reboot and got a black screen) and i got away from ubuntu and used other distros.  I found a peculiar work around (by accident) where i used my sisters computer to install ubuntu lucid lynx on several hard drives and used them hard drives in my other computers and they worked reliably.  otherwise i would get a black screen after installation and reboot.  it would seem to suggest that the hardware detection was not working properly, but that is merely speculation by me.  i'm just a user.  I verify the hash every time i burn a disk, so it's not the disks (or the software on the disk) fault.

i have a stack of over 100 distros and i think that each computer i have has about a 50% chance of installing any given distro.  you might want to consider trying another distro.  fedora is a red hat derivative.  and opensuse is an independent linux.  just a suggestion.

                                      stalesweetness,

if it's ubuntu you installed, you will stay in ubuntu.  if it's fedora you installed you'll stay in fedora.  i have never heard of any linux that allows you to upgrade to a different distro.
another thing to consider is the amount of time the OS offers security updates.  lucid lynx is an LTS (long term service) that is supported for 3 years.  i've heard centOS is a seven year OS, and some distros are rolling updates (i'm not sure what that means, but it may mean it's supported as long as the distro isn't abandoned) maybe someone can come along and clarify this as i am not sure.
for what it's worth, i hope you are able to get ubuntu working.  i posted on the official ubuntu forum about my display problem and nobody ever replied.  it looks to me like the display problems are common now (at least they are for me, unfortunately).  i've also spent a few hours trying to troubleshoot the problem, but couldn't fix it.
as i stated earlier, i have over 100 distros on disk and don't regret spending the time and money on them one bit.  not only do they help with diagnosis, but it's also 'neat' to try something new.  you also learn alot from the project.
i've already suggested a couple of distros that are high quality, well supported, and friendly to newbies.  a couple others that i suggest are salix and pardus.  be careful not to install unless you are sure that it's for you.  i've had it happen where i was using windows and had problems that i thought were fatal and reinstalled, then got ideas that may have repaired the windows that i wanted to keep, but it was too late.

Can't get crap to work. Downloaded it 10-11 times and burnt several disks with different programs. Still get to the install screen, click install and it goes to a black screen with a blinking line and thats it. So I am checking it as solved just to know I am done discussing it.
