Question regarding error 0x80042318
« on: April 27, 2011, 03:05:27 PM »
I am running Windows 7 64bit on a home made machine.  It has been running quite well for about 6  months.   Recently, while trying to trouble shoot a problem that I have, I tried to create a "SYSTEM RSTORE POINT".   After atttempting to do this for a few seconds it came back wiht the folowing message:

"The restore point could not be created for the following reason;   An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).   The problem occured while trying to contact VSS writers.   Verify that the  Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for  Associated errors in the event logs
0x80042318

OK on VSS and ESS"

Now I do not have the slightest idea what they (IT) is talking about.
How do I  "Verify that the  Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for  Associated errors in the event logs"
 • What is  0x80042318 ?
What does it mean "OK on VSS and ESS??

HELP ! !   JIM

You are much appreciated..     Thank you ,

Click Start and in "Start search" type in:
services.msc
Press Enter.

Services window will open.
Look for Event System service and the Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service.
See what their status is.

The first one would be System Event Notification Service and it should be set to "Automatic".

Try this solution: http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1127680.htm#hyperanchor1.3%3A%2F%2Fa%5B%40id%3D%26quot%3Bpostcount4258019%26quot%3B%5D%2Fstrong%5B1%5D(0)(1)()

Okay, I started VSS and the
System Event Notification was set on Automatic and was started.   Same results when I try to create a Restore Point.    I am looking into your suggestion

OKAY Broni;   I tried #5 and everything went well untill I got to wbem.   There were two repository's

"repository.001"  created 4/12/2011  and "repository" dated today.   (Maybe when I tried to create a restore point.)   Anyway, when I tried to rename repository it refused saying that it was already open in another program??  I tried to delete it and rename repository.001 with the same results (on the deletion).   What other program can it be opened with?...JIM

Are you in Safe Mode?
Did you open "command prompt" as administrator?
Start and in "Start search" type:
cmd
Hold SHIFT and CTRL keys, press Enter.

BRONI NOPE. I must be doing something wrong.     After I type in net stop winmgmt  I then close the Command prompt window, go to COMPUTER  > C > windows > System32 > wbem   and open (still in the safe mode).   There are the two repository file (the old one still renamed).   Any attempt to rename the latest one results in the same error  message.
You are much appreciated..     Thank you ,

One more time....do you open "command prompt" as administrator?
After typing net stop winmgmt do you press Enter?
After pressing Enter, you should see a message, that the service has been stopped.

I log on in the SAFE mode as administrator, that is I have to  enter my password to log on
then I type CMD, ctrl shift enter.      I do type in net stop winmgmt and press enter and YES I do see a message that the service has been stopped..    Then I close the commmand prompt window by typing exit > enter and    go to COMPUTER  > C > windows > System32 > wbem   and open,   still in the safe mode.  etc etc.   I will go through the whole procedure again and get back.

Thank you so much for your patience with me.   I realize it must be trying at times working with people thru this media.  I appreciate your efforts regardless of the results.   Thanks again....JIM

BRONI  Viola.  I went through the whole procedure again and this time everything responded as expected.  I was able to rename the repository file  and reset it.      HOWEVER, I still cannot create a  restore point.  I get the same error message.    Thanks again.  I will keep trying.   This is not the only problem that I have.  It all started when I tried to install software for my  new wireless printer.   But that is another subject.   ....JIM

OKAY I tried that.   There must have been over 30 generic Volume Shadow copies.   I uninsulated them all.  Then reset the computer, went to system recovery and tried to create a resstore point.   Same result.... same error message.
You are much appreciated..     Thank you ,
