    Nvidia 9600gt GPU keeps crashing.....
    « on: May 24, 2011, 02:41:32 PM »
    Hi,

I have a nividia  9600 gt gpu. Everytime I play the game Mass effect I get stuttering as the company logos pop up. The game runs slow and after about an hour of play my graphics card will crash and the screen will turn black with just a - slash blinking at the top left corner of screen.

I then have to reboot my pc. When I checked the windows event log to see what the error was it says something about the nv4 diplay driver getting stuck in an infinite loop.

Things I have tried to fix the problem:

    I have updated my bios

I have updated the game and patched it to latest patch

I have updated nvidia driver to latest driver

I have updated directx to latest version

I have uninstalled the nvidia driver and reinstalled it in safemode.

I have run a program called video card stability test for an hour which turned out fine with no crashing

I have lowered graphics settings in game to see if it would make any difference. It didnt.

Keep in mind that I have played this game many times before on this exact same rig with highest settings with no problems at all.

    My rig:Intel core due e7400 2.8ghz 4gb ram 250 gb hdd 9600gt nvidia 512mb Windows xp sp3

Attached is a pic of the exact error message that comes up in the windows event log.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you run any other games on this rig with heavy graphics for hours to isolate game problem vs hardware problem?

What is the warning you got just before this event? I can see TCP warning. Can you post that as well?

I found this on the web.....it may help

This event occurred together with event 1003 (source: system, type: error). I reseated the video card, set the Virtual memory to 0 and then reboot, delete the pagefile.sys file and then set the virtual memory back to normal. This resolved the problem

I would also suggest that you uninstall your video drivers and do a reinstall

I opened up my rig and took the GPU out of it. It was really dusty by the fan. I cleaned it out with a can of air, but still couldnt get all the dust out of it. I put it back in and started up mass effect. The game was real choppy, even choppier than ever before and after playing for three minutes I checked and saw that the GPU temp had risen to 70c. I stopped playing.

Is there anything I can do with this card or should I get a new one?

          Update

I just saw a video on youtube that showed a guy taking apart, cleaning and reapplying thermal paste to the gpu. I am going to try that and see if it helps.

          you can replace those.

Although, it usually means having a personal stock of older cards. I took the fan off a 6600FX (PCI) and put it on a 5500FX with no ill effects a few years ago. Seems that most video card fans are pretty "standard".

            Update....

Have taken apart the GPU completely. Took the fan off. Cleaned it. Cleaned all dust off GPU. Took all old thermal paste off of GPU. Applied new layer of thermal paste onto heatsink. Put the card back together and put it back in my pc.

            The problem still persists.

I'm starting to wonder if it is really my GPU or something else.

Could it be a ram problem?

You can run a memory test program.

But is is unlikely RAM is the problem.
Can you verify that it is heat related?

Ran the ram test and it passed.

Shouldnt be heat related because I cleaned out the video card completely and reaaplied thermal paste

70C isn't high for a video card. It's too high for a CPU, but not a GPU. For most (but not all) video cards, you're safe below about 90C. (Varies from card to card, check with the manufacturer for specifics.)

If you have access to another card or if your motherboard has on-board, try switching.

                Final update...

Well after two months of crying myself to sleep every night I have finally solved this problem. Before I tell you what the solution was I just wanted to explain why I hadn't tried this solution earlier and what the process was to actually find this solution....

First of all, two months ago I started to notice some slowdown from my computer right after I had moved in to a new apartment. This was a separate issue which I finally fixed as referenced in this thread that I created a month ago "http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,118979.60.html#bot".

So, finally after fixing this issue that turned out to be a hardware issue my computer was running alot faster, but my game wouldnt play right.

I assumed it was my graphics card. The first thing I automatically did was to update my graphics drivers. BIG MISTAKE!  Then someone suggested that I rollback my drivers to an earlier version. Unfortunately I had already done a full reformat of my HDD because of the previous problem and had no eralier drivers to roll back to.

Then I decided to go to the nvidia site and get some help with thier live service. Well, The tech tried to help me as best he can, but to no avail. He had me try four different nvidia drivers which I installed four frickin times! Still no go.

So from that  I figured it had to be a hardware issue right? Wrong! NEVER assume anything when it comes to your pc.

So, I took my card out, took it apart and cleaned it completely. I put it back in my system and still no go.

Finally I was googling my issue which really didnt seem to have definite solution. (everyone seems to have there own idea on how to fix the prob but no one was sure.)

I started thinking what if it was software related. But how could it be as The tech guy at nvidia had had me try four different drivers? Well I decided to go back to nvidias site and see if they kept old drivers on thier site that I could roll back to. Bingo!

They have drivers going all the way back to january of 2010!

So, I decided to try the oldest driver I could find which was the january one. I installed the driver and tried my game out and Voila! it worked flawlessly!

You can imagine how angry I was to realize that my big mistake had been to update my drivers to the newest driver for my card thinking that the new driver would be "better".

I guess the moral of this story is that newer isn't always better and sometimes the simplest of solutions is usually the right one.

My only question is how can nvidia release new drivers that aren't stable like they are better for your card when they sure as *censored* aren't?

BTW thank you to all who tried to help me with this issue.
