    Deleted a registry file
    « on: May 27, 2011, 08:45:03 AM »
Story short: I got a virus, I deleted the virus files, while deleting the virus files I deleted 'exefile' folder (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\exefile)

now I can't run any exe files because I get an error message

regedit is an exe file so I can't re-open it again

I can open exe files through other file types like opening irfanview.exe with a .jpg file or itunes.exe with .mp3 file.

I'd really like my exefile back. I haven't done any system restore saves ever and system restore is .exe anyway :|

Edit: http://www.computerhope.com/reg.htm Apparently I can edit my registry in command prompt with a bunch of scary looking commands.

If someone could send me a copy of their 'exefile', maybe I could use the import command listed on that web page

You didn't state which OS you're using, so:
    Windows Vista

    Windows 7
    http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7/

Download the EXE zip file for whichever OS you're currently using, extract the REG file from it, then double click the REG file to enter it into the registry. This should fix your problem.

I'm on windows 7 and I think I should point out it's not actually the '.exe' registry file that I deleted but 'exefile', I will try this anyway and see if it works.

        Glad that worked for you.
You may want to back up your registry.
