    root directory

    ok, simple question here. correct if im wrong but windows 7 has a root directory of c:/windows ... so what is the equivalent for windows xp? is it c:/winnt or c:/windows?

    To the best of my knowledge, by default all versions of Windows install to C:\Windows. Certainly XP does.

      Alright thanks. I know windows 2000 had a was different than windows vista and 7. but i wasnt sure if windows xp was the same.

      Win2k Windows directory default was named WINNT

      I think it was the same for NT4.0 & NT3.51

      You're probably right. I went from DOS to Win 3 to 3.1, 95, 98, XP, Vista & 7. So in fact I guess I lied - never used NT either :)

      Just a point - the "root" directory of a disk is the top folder, so that the root directory of drive C for example C:\. The folder where you find the Windows files is the system root folder and is pointed to by the system variable %systemroot% in all NT family OSs and is preferable to hard coding a particular folder name if you want applicability across all Windows NT derived OSs. The change from WINNT to Windows was in Windows 2000 Server.

      The so-called "Professional" versions were C:\WINNT, i.e. WinNT3.51, WinNT4.0, Win2kPro
      The so-called "Home" versions were all C:\Windows, i.e. Win3.1, Win95, Win98, WinME
      Don't know about Win3.11 (Windows for Workgroups)

      WinNT didn't even have support for FAT32!!
