System restore doesn't work after fighting with virus
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:37:14 PM »
Hello. I know there are a lot of topics about that on the net, but i have read them all and none of the answers solves my problem. I spent 10 hours today trying to fix it any way possible.
Despite always having Avast antivirus, I got the virus "Windows XP restore", which blocked all my files. I was able to download SpyBot, scanned my computer, removed viruses (turned out i had many). Was able to open my files again, but still system tools were missing. I removed spybot, installed malwarebytes which found many more junk and removed it. However still no system tools. I started system restore through cmd, but after i pick restore point and click next - nothing happens. I was able to restore my system tools in start menu. BUT STILL windows restore doesn't work. I read online that a lot of people have this problem. But solutions offered to them did not help me. I tried to restore in safe mode, turning off antivirus. I also reinstalled system restore tool (backing up few of my restore points and putting them back into system restore folder). But still I can not get past this NEXt button. it just doen't work. i do not get any error notifications. I am very frustrated with that and would love any advice. i feel liek some other things are missing from my start menu, that is why i want to go a week back. I really do not want to reinstall windows.

Welcome to the C.Hope forums.

It's a bit late but the C.Hope Authorized Malware Removal Specialists may be able to assist you.  Go here and follow the instructions posting all/any logs in the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum not in this one.

Be aware that the Specialists are very busy so a response may not be as prompt as you would want.

Good luck.
One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.

It is not advisable to use system restore on a previous date when an infection occured or detected regardless on the level of success you achieved. All system restore points should be turned off during this process as it would reinfect the system. This link will provide you the answer on why system restore is not viable after an infection and removing some or most.   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831829
