up grading an old computer need help
    « on: June 20, 2011, 10:36:08 AM »
Hi,  I need a bit advice:  I have an old computer, because of finances I have to do with this.  I have a Asrock k7s8xe motherboard and a AMD 3800 CPU, can I put a fast CPU in this computer and will it help?

You currently have that motherboard and CPU paired in a system.  Is that right?  Based on what I read at http://download.asrock.com/manual/K7S8XE.pdf (pg. 5), that motherboard does not support a dual-core processor such as the AMD 3800.  So, please clarify your situation.

Well, according to the reference I cited, that motherboard will not support an AMD 3800.  You're really as high as you can go with that motherboard, as far as the CPU is concerned.

Hi, these are the supported CPUs for your motherboard: AMD Athlon, AMD Athlon XP, and AMD Duron

It's up to you if you wanna buy a new CPU (mentioned above) with higher clock speed or upgrade your RAM. Again, please check the link. ;) Good luck!

Oh sorry, Athlon XP 3200 is the fastest AMD processor for socket A (462). The other one with 2333 MHz is used only in Hewlett Packard personal computers. I believe you're using the 2200 MHz Athlon XP 3200. So my suggestion goes to RAM upgrade. ;)
