To confirm this hook it up as a slave drive in another working PC.

Were i a betting man (which I'm not) i would wager it is NOT a dead drive. Your suggestion has been reiterated twice to the O/P so far (before your advisory) truenorth

It was a CD r/w but only a DVD reader.  It also would not work

Have you tried connecting this optical drive that came with the Dell 5150 to another system? Still good or goner?

To all: thank you for the help.  This forum has assisted me through several  muddy water episodes.  As of yesterday afternoon, the drive is working.  Here's what I found/did: I noticed that the last letters in the drive's interface description were ATAPI, the PI got me going.  Weather it stands for parallel interface or not I'm not sure, but when I went back into the bios and enabled the PATA ports (which I'm sure I probably did at some point in this show, but not at the right time, found them off) then rebooted, it recognized it and away we go... go figure.  My ISP has been down since yesterday, couldn't get back to everybody.  Once again, I thank you for all the help...
