cant get my icons on screen when start up

I'm thinking you were pertaining to desktop icons on your laptop. Right-click mouse on an empty space on your desktop and look for Show desktop icons for XP.

i pressed control and delete and task mgr came up .then i entered explorer exe and all my desk top icons came up .but idont know how to put them back on screen for startup.

Patio is telling you that you need to go to our virus/malware section.  It could be a virus or malware causing the problem.
You need to follow the link that Patio posted and follow the directions EXACTLY, post the logs in a new thread there - do NOT post them in this thread.

Try this:
Right Click at your desktop, then Properties.
Display Properties box will appear, then select desktop(next at Theme), then Select Customize Desktop and Desktop Item box will appear. Then  select icon you want to display at the Desktop.
