DevMgr has 2 errors, usb's broke, cpu @100% constantly
« on: July 28, 2011, 06:19:05 PM »
Hello all,

I am here from SuperDave over in Malware where we have worked for over a week making sure all my virus/spy/malware issues are cleaned up, which they now are. I am working from a Windows XP Media Center pc and my problem began with my cpu running at 100% on a constant basis. This is still the case. I am running in safe mode with networking. I have Norton anti virus which is disabled as is my windows auto updates as they take too many resources and the machine will not run with everything loaded up. I have been posting, then disconnecting from my home router and just checking for replies on a periodic basis.

The following is where we ended our relationship in the malware forum.

Can you get into Device Manager and see if there are any yellow warnings there? Right-click My Computer, select Properties, select Hardware and open Device Manager.

Thanks again Dave, and in fact I do have 2. They are located in the Non Plug and Play Drivers section and one is the catchme and general tab says the device is not present or does not have all its drivers installed. (code 24) On the driver tab it lists the service and display names as "catchme" and says that the device's status is started, and that the startup type is "demand".

The second one is SYMTDI and it's mfg is unknown and it also says that the device is not present, is not working properly or does not have all its drivers installed. The device usage says :use this device (enable) In the driver tab, the service name is SYMTDI and the display name is Symantec Network Dispatch Driver and the status is stopped. The startup type is :system".

What say ye I should do now my good  wizard? I have a feeling we're getting really close to solving this!

MM ---  So this is where we are today. I have these two items that are giving me problems, and am hoping for a solution to this first. Next Dave had me run a program called Process Explorer and it revealed that the item that is hogging all the processor is system, as I already knew from Task Manager but this went deeper and I found that there are always 3 USB items running. They all say USBPORT.SYS+0x6086 and like I said there are 3. The CSwitch delta number varies with the top one running from 50 to 70 and the other 2 adjusting depending on that 1st one. After those three, there are 8 items using some CSwitch allocation, varying around 1 to 4. These read variations of ntoskrnl.exe!exraishanderror+0x1450 having different numbers on the end. Some say domainformailslotbroadcast, requestwaitreplyreport+0x200 and other things.

I have no idea which of these is supposed to operate, which is why I am here. I do not know when or why the usb ports stopped working, but we use our printer through a usb and it worked before the cpu problem started. I could not print once I started working on this problem, but I just assumed it was because I was in safe mode or something.

Ok guys, it's all yours. I hope I have laid some decent groundwork, but let me know where we go next and thanks in advance.

MM

Thanks CC, that was easy enough. No more errors in the PnP device department.

Still running in safe mode with networking and cpu is running at 100%.

Whats next?

Thanks CC. I did the upgrade you recomended  and looked around ont he HP site but did not upgrade anything else. I tried to run a software update program that SuperDave had rsuggested but I can't get it to run as my FlashPlayer is messed up, or won't run in safe mode. I will do that after I get my cpu under control.

As of right now, that has not happened. I am still in safe mode and running at 100%.

What's next?

Reboot to Normal Mode to see if graphics driver functions.  You can download Flash Player & install:  http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/10128/

Here's the Realtek sound drivers:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-36940-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=1821850&sw_lang=
You can get updated ones directly from Realtek:  AC'97 Audio Codecs (Software)

Ok, well that was fun. A 40 minute boot up but the video driver seems to work... Now I'll go for the Flash Player install.

40 minutes?  Obviously, something is still wrong.  Is it possible that it's doing Windows Updates?
You may have to go back to SuperDave.

Well I finally got flash player to install, and am now getting audio drivers. I am still running at cpu 100% constantly. I have windows update disabled, and all of my fw/av Norton stuff is disabled. I have cut everything down I can to try and at least be able to run in normal, but it takes forever to do anything. Like I posted earlier, it has something to do with the USB's, as shown in that system monitor program I listed. There are the three items. Did you see that post earlier? If not, please go back and run through that, as that is what I believe is the problem.

The audio driver update has finished so I need to re-boot. Be back in about an hour...

Ok, this boot came up just under a half an hour. I really don't know what the audio driver update did as there was nothing unusual about the boot, and nothing to tell me it works or not. I did get the flash to install though, so I may run that program that Dave had me dl and see if I can get all my software up to date. I am posting the comments from my first post here about the USB issue.

"Next Dave had me run a program called Process Explorer and it revealed that the item that is hogging all the processor is system, as I already knew from Task Manager but this went deeper and I found that there are always 3 USB items running.

I hope I have laid some decent groundwork, but let me know where we go next and thanks in advance."

If any devices are connected to USB (except for mouse & keyboard), disconnect them for now.  Is one of them an HP printer?  I've seen those hang the bus.

At the moment , all I can think of doing is for you to go to the Device Manager, delete (or uninstall) all items under Universal Serial Bus Controllers,  refresh (or reboot) will reinstall all drivers.

I don't see any chipset drivers on HP's website, so it must be using WinXP's.

OH MY MF'N GOD!!!!! After a MONTH of messing with this stupid thing, cleaning it 10 ways from Sunday and pulling out what little hair I have left, I used Process Explorer to try and kill the usb that was hogging the cpu and it would not let me, but it WILL let me suspend it and BINGO! The system idle process jumped up to sometimes being near 100% but my CPU is running normal! Ho Lee Cow man I needed that today!

Ok, so now that I can at least GET this thing to run normal, even if I have to suspend the USB everytime I boot, at least I can work on the thing. That was the biggest *censored* is it taking SOOOOOOO long to DOOOOOOOOO anything!

That other link was really helpfull CC and I really do appreciate it. So I'm off to try and uninstall the USB controller and then re-boot and see if that will bring it back to life. And btw, we DO have an HP OfficeJet 5610 as our printer, so maybe that's what caused the problem in the first place.

Thanks SO much CC!

It's more an issue of the HP printer driver/software than the printer itself.  I guess all you did was unplug the printer?  Try reinstalling the HP printer software, select only the driver & not all the other junk.

I just looked it up, it's an all-in-one.  The software is a huge resource hog.  I had one about 8 years ago, it was nothing but trouble.  Now, I have 12 year old HP LaserJet with HP network adapter, 1 printer for 3 computers.  Nothing to lockup a computer.

No, the printer was never plugged in, as I unplugged it when I discovered that the usb's were not working. So now I, through the process explorer, suspend the problem usb item and at least run the pc. After that, I ran my deliquent MS updates, then updated and activated my firewall and anti-virus so I can at least surf with alittle more confidence. I then opened up device manager thinking that this would be easy. I first clicked on the top item, the USB Host COntroller. This opened up the warning window and I clicked ok, then waited about 5 minutes and figured this was too long, and checked it in task manager and it was not responding so I ended the task. I then went to the bottom of the list and was able to delete the 3 USB Root Hubs with no problem. There is 2 items listed as Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller so I tried both of those, one at a time. Neither can be deleted and only hangs Device Manager.

So, it then thought I would try and uninstall the drivers and it won't let me do that either. I can't even disable them. It will let me do nothing with these remaining three items. Looking for suggestions CC. Thanks again!

Further research finds chipset is ATI.  I though ATI was only the graphics.  USB drivers should be part of this.

Ok, one more update before I install your previous link. I uninstalled the three USB roots as I mentioned before, did a re-boot and windows found them and re-installed them. But before that happened, my pc booted fine! I have process exp loaded in the startup so it was on and monitoring and when it got to the last USB driver, the cpu imediately ran up to 100%. I suspended all USB processes and it runs fine.

Very strange indeed...

CC I can't grab that file. All links return to a "cannot display the webpage". When I click on the file and try and save it it returns a "cannot download the file. Server returned extended information" whatever the *censored* that means.

If you have another link, that would be cool. I'll be searching for another source too.

Ok, I have the file and have been instructed to install through Device manager. Where am I installing this? What driver am I looking to replace with it?
File description for sp26608.exe is:  Spring 2006 Original ATI Chipset Drivers
It's shown under file--properties--version tab

Installation Instructions1. Download the driver package.
2. Double-click on the icon for the driver package downloaded in Step 1, and then click NEXT.
3. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click NEXT.
4. Click OK to continue. The original drivers are now stored in the C:\SoftPaq\sp26608 folder.
5. If Device Manager does not start automatically, use the following steps. Otherwise go to Step 6:
a. Click Start.
b. Right-click My Computer, and then select Properties.
c. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
6. Click the + (plus) sign next to "System devices" or "Other devices".
7. Right-click SMBus Controller or the device you want to update, and then select Update Driver....
8. Click NEXT to install the software automatically.
9. Click FINISHED to complete the installation.

Ok, I have everything done and I see the readme file where you got the instructions in the softpac directory, but when I try to install the driver it says it can't find a better match than the one I have. Doesn't matter which option I choose, automatic, install myself, include the folder where the file is stored, it always says cannot be done...

Ok again, I went back and went to the HP site that wouldn't work yesterday and today it does. Clicked on the dowload button and it all went though, but still would not update. I notice soemthing funny though, in that on the "general" tab it said that there were no drivers installed for this device, but on the drivers tab it showed that there were drivers and they were dated in 2004. So I uninstalled the ATI SMBus. I am now going to re-boot and see what pops up.

SMBus is the only ATI chipset driver in the Softpaq.  SMBus is not USB, so forget about it.
You might want to check the USB settings in the BIOS, F1 at startup.  Turn Legacy on and set all other references to auto.
I have an old Compaq that also does some strange USB stuff.  If USB HD is connected, it hangs the POST.  It works fine with USB flash drive.  I've only had it a few months, & it worked fine when I first got it.  I've heard that Asus OEM motherboards of that era were tempermental.

If your HP has a card reader, try unplugging it, see diagram F_USB1, F_USB2 at bottom of motherboard.  You can actually plug & unplug them while running, it's only USB.  They're keyed so only can go in 1-way.

CC, I have been doing some ooking around and came across this message in another forum. What do you make of the theory? More specificaly, this line..."Update the driver in device manager while a mass storage device is plugged in and select to choose the driver yourself and change it back to Root Hub" How would one try this?

MM

"fyn23-02-08, 12:43 PM
I just joined this site because I had the same problem with Windows XP and a via USB 2.0 pcmcia card and believe I found a solution.

Since 2002 I've been using the copy of XP Home that came with my laptop, have not re-installed it for a number of years (I've been using backed-up drive images made with acronis instead of clean installs) and never had a problem with the via chipset in the pcmcia card in all that time. So it's not a problem with via or XP as such.

But I recently decided to format a new HDD and do a proper clean install with Win-XP. I got the same hardware interrupts whenever I used a usb flash drive that others have reported on this thread.

But I still had my old HDD backed up and so compared the device manager in both.

The error seems to be that when a mass storage device is plugged in XP mistakenly switches to a USB2.0 Root Hub driver, where in my old XP installation it remains Root Hub. Update the driver in device manager while a mass storage device is plugged in and select to choose the driver yourself and change it back to Root Hub."

This did not stop the device operating as a full usb 2.0 device in anyway but Hardware Interrupts and DCP's dropped right down to 0% with the occasional jump upto 0.98%. Much better.

Hope it's of use to someone else

On one of my computers, all DM USB drivers are dated 7/1/2001, except for VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller which is dated 6/1/2002.  All are provided by Microsoft, including the ones that say VIA.

It can't hurt to update the drivers with the device attached.

I can't get the device manager to do anything with the USB Host COntrollers. Right now it shows that the 3 root hubs are suspended with red x's through them. I cannot delete them now. I can do nothing with the PCI or the OpenHCD Controllers. If I try and delete them, DM hangs. If I try and update them DM hangs. I can't update thema nd I can't delete them. When I plug something in to one of them, nothing happens. No lights, no auto connect, nothing.

If I go to process explorer and try and "kil" them, it says that this cannot be allowed. All I can do there is suspend them. The pc runs fine like that, but of course I have no printing capability.

They are listed inside of "system", then threads. They show up here, 3 of them, and one of them is taking up 97% and the others fluctuate. They called USBPORT.SYS+0x6086, all three the same. System on mine is listed second after system idle.

I tried everyting in safe, including changing all security permissions to my one account, deleting all other accounts and permissions and associations, and it still will not let me delete or kill these ****. I'm getting really ticked off about now...

According to HP, you do have a memory card reader.  Unplug it from the motherboard.

I did see that note but put it on ignore because I'm basically lazy and didn't want to ull and disconnect the entire thing to get at it. If you really think it has a chance of doing something, I guess I'll crawl around down there and give it a try. We do use it quite often too for the card in our cameras. I also have seen a lot of troubles that have come up from using this f'ing Apple Software, which once again I have deleted ALL of. Both the kids have iPods and they get locked up and have to be sync'd with iTunes, and every time I load that junk on this Windows pc I have problems. I told them this time to save up your money for a MacBook because it ain't evr going back on one of my Windows machines.

Do you really think that will help unplugging the card reader?

It's about the only thing I can think of that would cause you all these problems.  All card readers are assigned a drive letter in windows even if no card is inserted.  Pop the side & pull the cable, doesn't get much easier.  Replacement card reader cost very little & come in both internal & external.  I have several of both.

Here's a handy utility I only started using about a week ago:  http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html

If any devices are connected to USB (except for mouse & keyboard), disconnect them for now.  Is one of them an HP printer?  I've seen those hang the bus...
Remember this?  I'll bet it starts working when you disconnect that *censored*!

well... no. It was plugged in below a plug that had two things connected to it, one being the slot for the extra hdd that can be inserted in a bay in the front. We have never had one. I unplugged them both, nothing happened. So I rebooted, and it is the same. There is nothing connected to any usb, and none of them work. I mean by that, if I plug in a flash drive I get a fraction of a second flash of the light, and then nothing.

The USB listed in PE is USBPORT.sys+0x6086 and it's TID is 380. It's CSwitch bounce around in the mid 200's and is MUCH higher there than anything else on the list, most only in the teens. The other two USB, which I can leave running as they do not use any CPU, bounce between 35 and 36. So this particular one is the culprit, I just can't kill it.

I don't know what you unplugged.  The card reader is plugged into one of these.
I've got a card reader with a card inserted & it doesn't even show in Process Explorer, which it shouldn't.

It was plugged into the one on the right. I wanted to make sure so I took the whole front cover off and pulled the wire back up and out next to the reader, and then found it as it came back out at the bottom, so I am positive it is the right wire. White wire, black end with 5 female connectors.

Those are both USBs.  This one may narrow the culprit down.  Scroll far right to see all the columns.

I've got another thing to try.  Found this:
There are no devices in the usb ports, however one usb port does not seem to be powered. When I plug a verbatium  portable hard drive in I  do not get a light indicating power on one of the ports.
If one of the USB ports is damaged, that will cause the problems.  Test all ports with a flash drive, see if it lights up and is recognized in My Computer.  If you have a spare USB keyboard or mouse, it will put a bigger load on the +5V

Search Google "usbport.sys runs 100%" & there's quite a few, some HP Media Centers.  No solutions.
http://forums.techarena.in/xp-hardware/1141079.htm

This must be a hardware problem, because it works in Safe Mode.  You have updated drivers, resinstalled drivers, etc.  BIOS provides limited USB support in Safe Mode.  You can try disabling the USB in the BIOS.  If that works, get a USB PCI card for $13.

What about completely wiping the pc? Then when reinstalling have nothing but the keyboard, mouse and scrren pluged in during setup, then ad other devices ONE at a time once windows is installed and up to date. Works wonders for me...

There are no USB devices attached.
Look inside each of the 4 USB ports, it's possible there is something in there that doesn't belong.

Ok, I grabbed this litte program and it listed a LOT of items, so I just killed them ALL! I went for the "calm like a bomb" approach and figured we could start fresh with everything gone! Now we're onto something... It's just that...it didn't work! Now when I run the program it show NONE, but in PE it STILL SHOWS THOSE 3 ARE RUNNING! *censored* is going on inside there? I'll work through the rest of your suggestions as well over the next couple of days.

How do you get all your data back? Like I said earlier (or maybe not) I got this pc used and he send a couple of disks with it but they are not the originals. I has a certified copy of Windows but I have no code if a full copy happened to be on those two disks. Do you backup all your data to an alternate drive or something? We have all our pictures and videos for 3 1/2 years on here, so that data must be saved. I have bought another HDD but it is of course based on an active USB connection which I am having a little trouble with at the moment...

If it's the original HD, there will be a Recovery Partition accessible at boot by F10.  This will restore "C" to the as-shipped condition, which means you lose everything.  You can get your data off first by burning to CD's or adding a SATA hard drive.  The SATA drive is probably your best bet for back up data.  Your stuff is worth $40-50, the cost of the SATA HD?  Depends on how much data you want to backup.  CD's hold about 600MB.

Try turning off the USB in the BIOS, that only takes a few minutes.

Truth be told I have it all backed up with Comcast's Secure Backup off site, I just don't trust it if I have any alternative. Now that I have it running ok, I may copy the Pics/Videos/Music over the network to my laptop overnight tonight. I tried to do that before but with the cpu stuck at 100, it said it would take a week so I aborted.

I'll try a re-boot and turn them off in the bios. We did something there before, like set them to auto or something. I can't remember exactly. BRB

That's right, same place,.  I think there are 3 options:  Auto, Enable, Disable.  Set to Disable.

Believe it or not, I disabled it and it is still there! I also went back to that usbview program and messed around with it more and found that I could view even more options like usb's with no drivers installed, deleted those, and usb root hubs, deleted all of those, basically went through every menu and deleted EVERYTHING so NOTHING is left to disable, and the three are still there under system in PE.

USBDeview is a small utility that lists all USB devices that currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used.

F5 will refresh USBDeview after you delete.  Then see if anything shows up.

On Comcast, updates shouldn't take more than an hour.  I get DL of 12Mbps, UL of 2Mbps, on standard Comcast tier.  Installing software will take a lot longer.  See for yourself:  http://speedtest.comcast.net/

I gotta say im very curious as to how this even started in the first place... What about internal MOBO headers? Anything joined onto those? I know on my MOBO I have an option for header USBs and Rear USBs - Meaning I can disable each individually. I don't think this is a common feature though :L

CC, so I am preparing for my wipe and I zipped my pictures and transfered them to my laptop over the network, and zipped my videoa and did the same. A couple of items could not be zipped because of their file extensions, so I just moved those separately, but then I got to music. Like I said before I have had iTunes on here from the kids' iPods, and have had trouble with that software on a constant basis. Well I can't compress the music files because there is aproblem with some of the files in iTunes "mobil applications". I have uninstalled ALL the iTunes and Apple software I can find on here, and there are no files shown in that folder, but it said that that folder was being "used by another program or person" and that I should log them off or close the program. Again I have nothing left on here that should be running. Since the only thing that EVER used iTunes was those iPods, and they connected via USB, could it be that there is some left over piece of Apple software that is trying to access the usb ports?
I don't have a clue...

At this point, anything is possible.  I have no idea how the iTunes app works or would cause the problems you're having.  If the reinstall is successful, no more iTunes.

That pretty much confirms it's a hardware problem.  I suspect one of the USB connectors is damaged.  You tried turning off USB in BIOS & it didn't work?  Need to review the BIOS to see why.

Yes.  They go to the other header I circled.  This is the first time you mentioned then.  Pull the cable off the mobo.  Not necessary to turn off computer.  There's a 1394 cable (Firewire) that connects to the mobo on the left side of PCI2 slot.

Your right. Pretty cheap right now. Got a quad core, 6gig, 1T hd HP desktop at Best Buy on sale for $425 and added a sweet 25" LED monitor for another $200.

So the old girl is sitting on the bench in the basement. I still can't believe that couldn't be fixed. There was nothing wrong with that computer, and I still can see no damage to any of the usb ports. The 4 in the back only had the printer plugged into one, and were NEVER used by n e 1. How would an old timer like me go about replacing this motherboard thing you speak of, if your up to helping me try and fix this thing still CC.

I told you computers have never been cheaper, even at BestBuy.  I didn't get my HP laptop from them because they don't carry this model & a similar one is $100 more.  This one is really easy to access, the whole bottom comes off by releasing 2 spring latches.  Just added another 4GB RAM today.
I don't know how I can help fix the old one by remote control.  There is something wrong with it, it's just not worth all the trouble for you.  If I had the board sitting in front of me, I might be able to spot something.  Many times there is no visual indication of any problem.  If you're just trying to learn about computer hardware, you could find a replacement motherboard for less than $100 that uses the same CPU & RAM.  Effectively, you'd be building a computer.  I've done this several times, with computers thrown in the trash.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure what to do I guess. It sounds like I should give up, but before that I may as well mess with the bios whatever the heck that means. Mental, can you give me the steps required to accomplish this? And yes, CC and I have tried everything else. If you read back through this thread you'll see all the spec for the pc, including diagrams that CC posted for me, as well as I believe the replacement model for the MB. I did some searching for these after he posted, and I have a micro center pretty close that has everything you could ever want to repair, I'm just not sure of all the steps. I may do some searching on YouTube to see if I can find some visual examples of how it is done.

Thanks Again

This one looks just like yours:  http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.asp?ic=MB64ASUA8AELEUN

Compare specs with yours:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00496280&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=1821850

It has the same Asus motherboard, A8AE-LE.  Probably came out of an HP.  Model says:  A8AE-LE SOCKET 939 OEM
For $55, get it.

Ok, I got my eye on a couple on ebay and I'll let you know if I pick something up. A lot of them there come from China though. Are you sure we can put it together again?

Hey, you wanna work on something else while I'm shopping for the old desktop? I have this laptop I'm on now, it is a HP ZD7000 I bought from a guy off craigs list the end of last year and he upgraded it to win 7, but it only had a gig of ram. So I bought another gig but it wasn;t matched tith the old one and i kept blue screening. so today i got a matched pair and it wouldn't even boot when i installed them and went right to a bs before it booted. now i am really confused about that issue. you wanns discuss it here or start a new thread?
