Is this winxp a full retail version.....from the grey matter ,for winxp to hang on install........it checks the hardware you have........and how many times the disk has been used....

Yes, the one os is the full retail version, the other was supplied to me with my dell laptop.

Hard Disk Drive.

You can test the memory using the following tool: Windows Memory Diagnostic

O.K. I'll give that a try. If that doesn't work I think I'll reformat and I downloaded from microsoft the bootable disk to download the drivers for xp. then maybe I'll be able to download the rest of the os after that.

    If windows loaded when he put in another CD Rom drive then he fixed that problem with loading the os, you need a new CD Rom drive.

    The other problem you have with windows now, is that some files may be corrupted. Get another Cdrom drive and install windows again. If the same thing happens or you experience other problems i would look at your hard drive.
