slow pc after format! no more viruses tho
    « on: August 30, 2005, 05:16:07 PM »
     Hi all.

I have just reloaded windows xp after formatting my C drive (with the windows CD) using the NTFS system. I had some problem viruses I could not remove, a worm that, once connected to the net it would send a lot of outgoing traffic, so I thought it was time for a format.

After the format and reloading Windows XP I have loaded up with the latest Norton AV and up to date definitions (from disc) plus a few credible spyware programs. All the problem nasties have now been eliminated from my PC HOWEVER... after my first visit to the WWW my PC is very sluggish and slow, fails to respond on things I click etc. I can try to open a window or file and it will take up to three or four minutes to open! My CTRL-ALT-DEL function does not work immediately, and I can't open the ISP details in the bottom RHS of screen when on the net.

I am at a total loss! I have formatted twice with exactly the same result. Norton, Spybot and Adaware don't find any nasties, so I'm guessing it's a program conflict of some sort? SHould I try to remove the programs one by one and see if the problem disappears? Another format maybe? (NO!!!!!!)

Please, if you can help me I would appreciate it very much! I would class myself as intermediate in my PC knowledge, I also have access to the web at work should I need to access any progs or files.

Thanks, I very much look forward to a reply!!

    :)

No, I can't use SP2 for some reason my disc is corrupt! It IS a borrowed copy!  :-[ Would a new copy of SP2 loaded on fix it? And no Merlin, I wasn't connected to the web when I reloaded XP. But thats a good point for other users!

I use dial-up to connect to the net, and I am not connected continually. When I reloaded windows I was not connected. I was careful to reload my antivirus prog, with new definitions, and anti spyware progs, then do scans, before getting on the net. The scans all came up clean.

I'm running XP 2002 version 5.1 and I have an intel celeron chip 1100mhz. I have no service packs, as the SP2 I 'sourced' could not be installed, something to do with the reg key! (oops) I usually cope allright with my 1100 and 192mb of ram. The problem is not immediate, but happens within an hour or less of internet connection. My Hijackthis log is below. Thanks again for your reply, and I look forward to hearing what you think could be the problem!

Removing cancer that has spread often causes it to grow back. You have to cut off the source before you can remove it.

        Firewalls
Use both a hardware and software firewall.
Be advised as dual software firewalls may cause problems

        ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
        Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options
