    My recommendation:

Primary: Avast or Avira or AVG
    Secondary (backup): SUPERAntiSpyware
    Tertiary (backup): Malwarebytes

Add CCleaner, SpywareBlaster and a firewall too.

Hey Allan, nothing. It's out of the topic. LOL. Just suggesting to have it too even the subject is focusing on AV  ;D

      SuperDave,

How are you? Is Microsoft Security Essentials a 100% free download without a trial, and without the garbage add-ons and third party software, where Essentials would be the only thing installed? Where can I download it from if it's free?

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials version 2.1.1116.0 on my corporate laptop cause it is lightweight. The only negative aspects of this AV system is their Full Scan option, it gives 2-2½ hours to complete the task even the used space in my local disk is only 80GB.

But your copy of windows must be genuine not an pirated one. It runs an genuine validation test before installing and doesnt install if  the genuine check fails.
