laptop not booting up as normal

hi there. I've a problem with my laptop. It's a dell latitude 6400. It has a sticker saying it was built for windows vista but I've installed xp on it. It was working fine then the other day when I turned it on it does the first dell screen then goes to a black screen wit a couple of lines of writing. That's normal for it but it stops there and goes no further.

I've stuck in my windows disk but it just goes to the screen asking what partition i want to install windows on. I've stuck in a disk with ubuntu on it and I can boot up with that and see the files on the hard disk are still accessible. So I think the drive itself is ok.

I've also tried holding F8 when it's booting up but it doesn't go into safe mode.

What can I try to fix this?

When you switched to XP did you re-install XP drivers for that model # ? ?

hi guys. thanks for the posts. i did install the correct drivers as i said it was workin fine for about 5 months and just suddenly stopped. any ideas
