    Fixed the problem by uninstalling the original ports and installing a PCI USB card.

    I saw the "don't tell me about USB errors" option earlier but was wary of that in case there really was some sort of damage being done to devices or the motherboard.

    That is one way of fixing the problem by adding the PCI card. The suggestion I posted was documented by searching : Power on surge hub - Don' t tell me about USB errors.
