Fall Housekeeping
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:47:03 AM »
Did my 3 month inside the case hosekeeping this weeksnd...
Although pretty clean to the naked eye i still blew out with a can of compressed air...added a HDD cooling fan since i'm up to 4 x 1G HDD's in that bay and re-assembled everything....

Wasn't i suprised...

CPU core temps and GPU temps went down approx 4 to 6 C...

Just a friendly reminder for those who haven't remembered to do it in awhile...

Is your box on the floor?  Since I moved it to the desk, it stays a lot cleaner.  My desk is huge, 50 year old solid oak executive desk.  Top is 36"Dx60"Wx1"thick.  Space for 32"HDTV, notebook, desktop & more, with room left over.

Not exactly on the floor...i retrofitted a fibreglass plant stand roller with casters when i bought the new case and attached it to the base...so it's sits approx 2 1/2" off the floor...
The case has both panels open fully extended so it's a matter of pulling it away from the desk and opening it like a fan for getting to the innards...
Pretty slick actually.

I also forgot to mention i spent about an hour doing wire looming and re-directing to side areas ,,,which as an afterthought probably had alot to do with the better circulation and Temps...

Still use SpeedFan?  You really need to check out HWInfo:  DOS, 32-bit, 64-bit versions.  He even has his own forum, responds the same day.  Puts out final updates every month with many betas in between.  I run a WinGadget in Win7-64. which monitors sensors in real-time.

I use that as well...thanx for the heads up.
Interesting that my BIOS readings were lower than both apps...so i'm pretty confident.

PS the pesky auxiliary # that both report is a bug with this ASUS MBoard...took awhile to track down info on that.

Still use SpeedFan?  You really need to check out HWInfo:

Can HWInfo control fan speeds to maintain a desired CPU temperature?

Well, I installed it, and it doesn't recognise my fan controllers so I won't be ditching Speedfan just yet

No.  As you've found out.
From the developer:
"Fan control was never intended to be implemented and there are no plans for a wide fan control support, there are other tools which offer advanced fan control for many generic LPCs/SIOs (like SpeedFan for example).
I implemented fan control only as a special case for few laptop models (Alienware and certain high-end HP models) because there was no other tool in the world being able to control fans there."

All looked real nice until i saw that "aux" temp (which you have noted) and thought boy thats getting close to roast baking temperature. Thank goodness it is just a faulty reading. Your reference to your adaptation for tower location while certainly innovative still has the comp. very nearly at floor level and as I'm sure you know thats where the real dust bunnies live. I suppose the convenience it is affording you can be offset with more frequent cleaning. I have found with many in various levels above and on the floor the floor ones really get full of dust much quicker. With newer higher heat generating computers now running many more fans i would suspect that even increases the dust collection at floor level. truenorth

I agree Truenorth with your assessment...however my workspace is limited to the fact that i have 4 full tower desktops in the enviornment...so moving my 2nd machine to a more comfortable space is out of the question...

I'll just stay happy with the results i've achieved...

This is my "cooling solution." It has been like that for over half a year.

Here is a speedfan shot on the AMD system while running 2 folding@home clients (smp client on the CPU, GPU client on the GT 430.)

transfusion's and patio's pictorial representations bespeak the absence of females in the surroundings (or isolated male defined space) as no females i know (not that i know a great number) would EVER tolerate that. But boy do they ever look neat. Particularly the one with the gum ball machine--no computer environment should be without one of those. The bare feet resting on the tower is a nice multi functioning of the use of the tower. A bit of padding on the top might prolong that function however the downside would be the adding of an insulation factor to the case. Ah well what is life but compromises! truenorth

I'm wondering how you maintain a CPU temp of 24C and core temps of 23C or lower.  24C equals 75.2F, which is a fairly normal room temperature.   How is that possible?  Do you normally keep a room temperature down below 70F?

      Normal room temps Soybean...approx 68F.

When i ran PassMark benchmark app yesterday they averaged approx 30C per core.

Gonna do some more testing today with AutoCad and Prime.
