Downloading From Firefox on Windows Vista

Just recently, anytime I try and download anything from the internet (firefox) such as simply an update, it initally downloads the downloader, but then it goes off the screen, and in order for me to actually finish the dowload, I have to go to my files and downloads off the start menu.

Is there any reason why and what can I do to resolve?

Did this start recently?
What if you use IE instead?

Go to your Firefox Tools/Options/General tab and checkmark the option shown in image.

Or, just press Ctrl-J, which will bring up the Firefox downloads window.

When you are looking at the Firefox Downloads window, you can right click on the file you downloaded and select "Open containing folder" to go right to your downloads folder.
