Are they both on the same LAN?  Or are you connecting from a different site?

yes. they are all on the same router. (They are like 20 feet away from each other.)

In that case fire up command prompt on the laptop and enter "ipconfig", to double-check that you are in fact using the correct IP address.

After that, make sure that remote desktop is enabled per Geek's link above (see the section "To allow remote connections on the computer you want to connect to").

Also check they are on the same workgroup - not completely necessary, but sometimes helps.

Both computers must have unique names. Do NOT depend on the IP address.Forget the IP address.  Can both both PCs see each other in "Network places"?

Good. So you have permissions.  -Right?

Did we  establish that you are NOT trying to get into a wimpy version of Windows 7? Read this:
Quote
All editions of Windows 7 include Remote Desktop Connection.

You can use Remote Desktop to initiate a connection from any edition of Windows 7.

You can connect to computers running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.

You can't use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, or Windows 7 Home Premium.
Is that the problem?

Do NOT depend on the IP address.Forget the IP address.

I'm puzzled why you've said this Geek, because this advice is bogus.

kenbob2311: Did you try this?

...fire up command prompt on the laptop and enter "ipconfig", to double-check that you are in fact using the correct IP address.
