Either Norton was terribly outdated or it didn't do a good job.

Either way, I would uninstall Norton and stick with AVG Free.

Lets concentrate on the problem at hand:

then i tried to change my resolutions again ...but still no luck

Very unfortunate.

We can simply force the computer to reinstall the drivers. (Keep the Windows 98CD ready!)

1. Go to the Device Mananger
2. Right click on your video card
3. Select remove
4. Restart the computer
5. Windows will now let you know that new hardware has been added.

If it does not automatically install the videocard, tell it to search under either C:\Windows\system32 or D:\Win98

Assuming that D: is your CD-ROM drive.

You might also be able to find the drivers under the driver list that Windows offers.

Exhaust these options first before installing the drivers I recommended earlier on.

i don't suppose there is anything i can do without going through the uninstalling...i have to admit this makes me a little nervous...my son uninstalled msgrv on our old computer and wiped everything out....also my windows 98 disc is at work...so if i wipe everything out i won't even be able to get back in here to ask for help...hoping i don't have to go this route...

You won't be removing 'windows' just the video drivers.
      (Read Raptor's previous post carefully)
BTW, do you have any info on your monitor?

        http://www.lavalys.com/
It will tell you all about your computer.

I see you already have Everest, use it to find out more about your monitor.
Flashing? One step at a time, fixing one may well fix the other.  :)

That's the one, every piece of the jigsaw helps.
Now, what directX do you have?
That should be easy for you to find now.  :)

I wonder if your old card supports above 640x480?
              Upgrade video card means $.
              Take it easy.  :)
