Next time it crashes, try to write down the error message. Or go into the event log and see if you can find out what happened.

Frequent random crashing seems to be a serious issue with Skyrim. Official "report your crash" thread sticky on their forums:
    http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1270631-crashes-during-gameplay/

37 pages of people posting about their crashes so far. Seems doing just about anything in this game will crash it. Surprised it got released if it's as bad as it looks from that thread. Reminds me of a beta test.

The game has only been out a little over two weeks, a lot of the crashing will probably get fixed in the first patch after they find the cause for enough issues.

Go to your start - run (or variation thereof) and type "mmc eventvwr.msc"

That will open up your event viewer and you should be able to find the error in there under Windows Logs, probably in the application log, but maybe in the system log.

You should have a look at this page, it's got fixes for most Skyrim-related issues.
              http://segmentnext.com/2011/11/11/skyrim-crashes-freezes-sound-keys-errors-fps-lag-textures-and-fixes/#ixzz1dPtwJyWa

              Concerning the crashing to desktop:

              15# Crash To Desktop Fix

Go to Start > Control Panel > Sound.
In the Playback tab, right-click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties.
In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu.

I noticed that there is 3"sound" fixes one at 44100HZ 24 bit , one at 44100HZ 16 bit and, one at 96000HZ 16 bit. ive tried all 3 and none worked.
ive also tried the nvidia control pannel to change settings that also didnt work.
i tried setting the shading settings to low and all other settings on medium and nothing.

They did release a patch to fix some glitches but it didnt fix the CTD problem.
hoping they will release more patches soon.

If there is any others fixes you come across i would be happy to give them a shot.
i should add that it only crashes maybe once a hour seems to be the average time.

Just a update... they have released patch 1.2 and 1.3 and still the issue persist.
