Changing only the processor may not make the computer much faster.   It's like putting a bigger engine in your car without upgrading the transmission, tires, etc.  You may also have to upgrade the memory, hard drive, video, etc.

A GX1 PIII-600 is not too bad.  What is your intended use for this computer?
    Specifications: Dell™ OptiPlex™ GX1 Systems

      Depends on many things:
      1.  Form factor of the processor
      2.  FSB speed
      Download Everest Home Edition
Under Computer--motherboard-cpu; it will tell all.

      Is this your motherboard?

You appear to have a PIII-Slot 1 processor, 600MHz is about the max, unless you get a Socket 370 to Slot 1 adapter (known as a Slocket).

Whatever you do, the integrated video will limit the performance for game playing.

I would recommend a different computer for gaming.

If your computer doesn't meet the minimum specifications for the game, chances are high that upgrading it won't do a whole lot of good.

And buying a new PC will somehow make you understand?

Go to How Stuff Works and do research.

By the way, there is no need to take apart the entire computer in order to find out what kind of hardware is installed.

Click on - Home Edition - I'll take you to the - Home Edition - download page.

Then you can give the full details on your mainboard.

Your Dell OptiPlex GX1 with 600MHz processor supports up to 768MB of memory.

600 Mhz is it. This is not a gaming platform. There is no AGP slot, so you will have to get by with PCI. The IDE bus speed is 33 Mhz. not ATA-100 or 133 as on newer machines. The max ram is 768, but not just any SDRAM that you might buy today will work. Get the picture? It is a business machine. They are very stable, but the kind of games you want will not work. For what you would spend attempting to upgrade, you could make a downpayment on a gaming platform, or buy an XBox.

Where did you find maximum clock of 800 Mhz? I'm telling you a GX1 will not do this. Some ahave had luck with a powerleap converter, but that gets you about a 1 Ghz. celeron and is over $100. As I said you do not have a gaming platform and expandability is limited.

If you use it for basic tasks, virtually everything except gaming, you have enough already.
