Before you buy a new CD-RW, try testing yours in another computer first.

Winxp does not like his old cd/rw drive.........hcl

ok winxp had no problems with cd- rw before virus or registry change. checked pc out with pc pitstop , thank you for the call, no problem reported with the cd-rw. so i am beginning to think that tracking down the changed registry value may be a way forward, rather than just buying a new cd rw... any suggestions

 ???I'M HAVING BIG PROBLEM....  EMACHINE  RUNNING XP,  MY DVD/CD-RW ROM  DRIVES/DEVICES/DRIVERS???
ARE NOT FOUND IN "MY COMPUTER".  WHEN I LOAD A DISK IN EITHER DRIVE, I GET NOTHING...  I LOOKED IN DEVICE MANAGER,  I HAVE 3 THINGS WITH YELLOW !! ON THEM,  I UNINSTALLED ALL, DISABLED ALL, AND EVEN TRIED TO UPDATE DRIVERS ON ALL,  SAME THING OVER & OVER...   I DISCOVERED THIS PROBLEM WHEN TRYING TO BURN CD, ERROR SAID NO CD-RECORDER FOUND,  ERROR CODE 39?  CAN SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME....  THIS IS HAPPENING TO THE COMPUTER I USE AT WORK.....   THANK YOU

try this.

1. device any cd-drive in device manager

2.check this in registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\
Services\ VxD\ IOS

     "StaticVxD"="*IOS"
      "Start"=hex:00
     "NoIDE"="1"     <- delete this

3. restart

if it does not work try this

delete this in registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I suggest a reinstall. Cheaper than a new CDRW, and probably time anyway if you use Windows longer than 6 months!
