All ways to get more disc space are not working

I've used disc clean-up.  I've deleted unused programs. I've done a Norton Full Scan for viruses with 0 found.  However, I can't get more than 1% space available on C drive.  Without more space, I can't defrag or use system restore.  Any suggestions?

When the free disc space is under about 5% to 8%, more or less, there is no easy way to recover drive space, except remove large seldom used programs

Hello doadie! You could delete all but the most recent restore points. You could also put all your pictures ect. on a external hard drive. This should give you enough free space to defrag and create a new system restore point. You can limit how much space is dedicated to restore points. How big is your hard drive?? 1% free space is not nearly enough to do any thing. Get a bigger hard drive or put your pictures on a  external USB. I only keep my OS and apps. on my hard drive. every thing else goes on a DVD or external hard drive. Depending on your OS, a 50 gig Hard drive should be big enough. I have 600 gigs but only use 30 gigs. I have W7.

You could use Treesize or Windirstat to view your hard drive space usage.

I think something else is going on.  Some history:  My computer was working fine a month ago.  Then I started getting High Memory Use warnings when I was on internet explorer. When the low space on C drive alerts started coming up a few days ago, I deleted unused programs and temp files, and I was able to free up some space.  However, it is now gone.  Last night I was able to use disc cleanup and get 1%.  Today, that is gone, too, and I haven't even used my computer.  (I've already cleaned up restore points.)  I'm a very low-level user and don't have much left to get rid of.  I don't have any music, but I could move my pictures to an external drive.  Again, though, I haven't made many changes in the last month.  It just seems like something is draining the space.  My full scan says there aren't any viruses, though, but it sure seems like there is.

What is the size of your computer Hard Drive?
Do you have the original CDs to install your programs? Even the Windows XP CD?  If you system locks up and you don't have a backup, you may have to install it all over again. And lose data you did not put on DVD.

I am using Norton Antivirus and have 105 GB.  I've backed up data and pictures on an external drive.  I can try Treesize.  I'm just afraid I don't have enough space to download anything.

1) If you have 105Gb free you have plenty of room.

2) If that's not what you mean, download it to the external drive and run it from there.

The 105Gb was my capacity, but almost all of that space was used.  However, I found the problem.  There was a setting in Norton that was backing up everything all the time.  It had used up over 70 Gb over time.  I've deleted it and reset the setting.  I now have pink in my pie.    Thanks for all your help.
