Reader won't read CD with new winzip file
    « on: September 16, 2005, 05:43:52 PM »
    Hi All!

I love this forum! You guys solved my last PC problem and saved me much anguish, I am hoping you can help me again?

I have just put a new Winzip file on a CD which had Winzip files on it already, from a previous version. The cd worked fine before I added this file, now I cannot access anything on the disc at all! The CD is not scratched, damaged in any way. I cannot open, explore, copy or access it. Just to make sure I polished the cd as well and it has made no difference.

The difference in versions of Winzip, would this have anything to do with how the CD is accessed by a reader? I need to get these files off the disc urgently, are there any other options to access them? An older OS, maybe? find someone with W95?

    I am very very stuck!!

    thanks, Chad

This can happen when you multisession cd’s.
Witch software have you used to burn the cd.

You can try isobuster this is a cd data recovery programme
Or copy the cd this can also help. The copy ma be readable again.

    Hope this helps

    Chad:

Are you able to browse the CD in Windows Explorer or My Computer and see the files there, or do you get some kind of error when you try to do so?

Hey... the first session on the cd was, oh, like 2001. I may have used Nero, not 100% sure. The last session, the one giving me the problems, I just used drag and drop in Windows XP Pro. Is this the problem maybe?? This ISObuster program could help?

When you multisetion whit two different software software there are usually problems and when they are so long apart, windows drag and don’t always close the cd properly or not at oll. (I my self never multisetion cd’s anymoor, do to I had the same problem)
And isobuster help me out to get the data back.

Ps have you tried to copy the cd. This can also help.

No, I haven't tried to copy it. I will! And if that fails, Isobuster will be the next on my list. OK, no more multisessioning? not even if XP drop and drag is the only thing I use now?

        Does this concern a CD-RW or CD-R?

Just a CD-R. Isobuster is having trouble reading the disc, it sits there examining the disc for a few hours before I lose patience. Still, the CD looks fine, no obvious scratches, dents, chips, warping of any kind.

Have you tried copying the contents onto a different CD yet?

If you are trying to use a copied CD with 8X or lower CD-ROM players, it will rarely work.

When you used Isobuster to read the CD was it in the cd/dvd-rom or in the cd/dvd-r?
When it was the cd/dvd-rom try it in the cd/dvd-r.
When I had this problem it took Isobuster +_ 2.5 u to read (examine) the CD it was a triple multisetion CD. I got al the data back.

The cd ma look fine but it’s about the data writhen on the cd. If the beginning or the end of the multisetion is writhen wrong you can’t read the cd anymore or windows XP will show it as an empty CD.

Try Isobuster on a good cd and se how long it takes.
Try the bad  in the cd/dvd-r and let Isobuster run. Be patient. If it takes more then 5 u try it on a adder pc. Whit a newer or older cd/dvd-rom/r

I wood also recommend burning with nero over XP drag and drop, because XP drag and drop don’t close the CD and this can gif problems on adder pc’s that they can't read it, but your own pc will still read the CD. (own experience)
