since this topic is already here I'll make use of it. I got a laptop and I'm trying to connect to the router.  All it is saying is validating identity even though the signal strength is very good. So it's basically not connecting to the router. I went into the control panel in network connections. under connection manager it says unavailable device is missing. does that have anything to do with it? We had another router and it worked very well. but we now we changed the router and the laptop just won't connect.  :'( help

You should have started a new topic.  That is generally preferred in the forum even though your question is closely related to the original post in this discussion.

Anyway, regarding your problem, did you have your wireless connection protected by WEP or WPA encryption with your old router?  If so, then you need to set up the same type of encryption and the password for the encrypted connection in your new router.

What make and model is your router?

no none of it was not encrypted.
Did you intend the double negative in your sentence?  If none of it was not encrypted, that means it was encrypted.  Is that what your meant?

didn't mean to type a double negative

According to http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6912/~/belkin-n450-db-wireless-router---user-guide, "By default your Belkin N450 DB includes a unique network name (SSID) and password (WPA Key).  You can change these though to something more personal and easy to remember if you like."

When you first tried getting a wireless connection with your router, were you prompted to enter a password in your computer?  Regardless, you will need to either set the same password in your computer's connection settings as the default password for the router or create a password and set it in both the router and your computer.
