When I open an existing Excel file, Excel also opens "Book 1" blank spreadsheet. How do I make it stop doing that? ???

Is there anything in your XLstart folder?

For office 2003 not sure about anything later, in the tools menu, options and on the General tab there is an option for "At startup, open all files in".
