    Blue boot screen sticks
    « on: September 21, 2005, 07:49:02 AM »
Soppy if this is already covered. I searched the topics and didn't find it. I might not be calling it right.

I have an HP Pavillion with Windows XP, SP2

Sometimes when it restarts, it gets stuck on the blue boot screen (F1 for setup, F10 for recovery)
If you shut off & restart like 15 times it will finally start windows.

It seems to go through the boot process but then freeze. I can hear the floppy boot and the light comes on. I tried changing the boot order, and booting with everything but the monitor disconnected with no success.

When it first goes to the sreen I can get into setup about 1/2 the time, the other 1/2 it says entering setup, but just sits there.

I'm afraid that one time it's just never gonna come back.
    Thank you for any input.

    Do you hear any beeps?

    How old is your computer?

Try to reset the BIOS to its fail safe or default settings.

computer is about 1 yr old, maybe a couple months more. A 2.7 ghz celeron.

setting to default settings had no effect.

It beeps once when screen comes up, then the sound which I'm assuming is the floppy booting since it does it when the light is on. Both are noises that it has always made during normal boot.

Does the POST succeed and does the problem start when Windows loads?

The post is black screen with the white letters (or the mainboard/PC brand screen) that appears before Windows loads.

No POST, whether boot works or not. I remember seeing it in the past.
Today the monitor wouldn't come out of sleep mode. Restarted an same prob. After about 12-15 tries, it booted up.
          ???

I defragged last night, Ive run adaware and spybot. Ran virus scan too. I'm gonna back-up again and try an earlier restore point. Don't know what else to do. Dont wanna recover if I can avoid it.

So when you turn on the PC, absolutely nothing is seen on the monitor?

          Do you hear any beeps?

          Rusty:

Are you able to think of any recent changes (even as much as a week ago) that were made?

          * A new program installed?

          * A new expansion card added?

          * A virus detected?

          * A power outage or brown out?

          * An angry room mate drop kicking your computer across the room?

          Anything like that?

          Doc

Sorry I couldn't get back. Well, now the computer wont go past the blue sceen, ever. If I f1 into BIOS, I can enable the boot time diagnostic screen. Then I get the POST. It lists the system info, the hard drive, and my two cd drives (cd-rw and dvd-rom) then the screen blacks out and nothing else.

I can't F10 into system recovery either, norcan I get safe mode.

Again, sory I couldn't get back, I'm running on laptop now. Thank for any help.

I also downloaded a boot disk and tried to boot from CD, but no go. It seems to try to read from it, but nothing happens.

If anyone needs more info, ask away. By the way, HP's fix is to send the machine out to them for service. They call that help!

              Thanks

As always, I would recommend booting with a Live Linux CD to see that there is no hardware problem first. If it is strictly software, a reinstall should fix it, though we will still have to get it loaded. Do you have a recovery CD? Did you make one when it was new? Can you order a CD from HP? Often you can for $10, but you have to be firm with them.  :o :o :o :o :o

I made a boot cd from winternal (ERD Commander), but ther directions were unclear. I put the cd in the drive and tried to restart?? How would I boot the cd?
Should it be booted from dos, and if so, how can I get into dos? All I can get into is BIOS :-/

                I'm so confused

I've never used, or even heard of that. What about a Live linux CD as suggested?

Well, I got recovery disks from HP, 'cause they were confident that they would work. I doubted so, since it seems to fail before the boot.

Does anyone have an idea why it would fail before the boot, and what to try to solve this?

Have I provided enough info to hazard some guesses?

If not please ask away, this is driving me nuts. I'm thinking about just buying a new machine.

                    Thanks,
                    Rusty

PS Can anyone tell me how to make sure my machine is setup to boot from my cd rom. It seems to run on start up, I can hear it spinning, then when the freeze happens, the light for the drive stays on(constant) but no spinning sounds. BIOS lists as follows:
                    System Time
                    System Date
                    (both correct)
                    Language
                    Legacy Diskette A [1.44/1.25 MB 3 1/2]

Download the ISO and burn it to a CD which will create a small bootable CD - 50 meg. (If you have someone with a CD burner) Start the machine with this in the drive. If it works, you'll know.

Glad you didn't go AWOL. I'm betting your next machine will not be an HP?  :o :o :o :o :o
