I want to use my TV as a duplicate laptop screen.

I am visiting my brother in law  who is laid up in sick bed.   He has a small ACER laptop taht  he wants to use in  bed.  But the screen is too small for him to read.   I told him that I could hook up his kitchen Tv as a second monitor.   But when I did that, the monitor wants acts like an extension of the primary laptop monitor.  What he wants is for the 21" TV to be be a duplicate  of the laptop, not a secondary extension fo the primary.  I have gone into the Dislplay  Properties > Settings > Advanced but if I remove the the second  monitor as an extensioon, it goes black ..    Can any  one help me??   Thank you in advanccce for reading this...
