Speakers do not work

First off, I'm not very good with computers, so sorry if what I say really confuzes you.

Hi, I just had to do a complete restart on my computer; everything looks as if I just bought it brand new. But now my speakers do not work. They turn on and everything; I even followed the wires and they're all hooked up to where they should be. Still no sound. Before I completely restarted the computer, in the bottom-right corner of my screen (where the clock is), I used to see a little picture of a speaker that I could double-click to adjust the volume of the sound. Now I don't see it there. If you know the problem or have an idea what it might be, please let me know. Thanks a ton.

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
What do you see under 'sound'?

      Install soundcard drivers.

Obtain these from the manufacturers webpage.
