    Maximum resolution 1280 by 800??
    « on: June 11, 2012, 02:46:13 PM »
Hi, I've just come back to a laptop I haven't used in awhile and I know this system is a pretty crappy but I was sure that it used to run at higher display resolution than it does.
I can only select a maximum display of 1280 x 800, is this normal for this card?

(Drivers are out of date but I updated and it made no change so rolled it back again)

I wish you wouldn't keep writing that. It looks childish. It's what it is. Some people would be very glad to have any computer at all. The DV5 range were OK in 2008, a bit over priced maybe, but OK for what they were designed for.

Really? Because this model had serious over heating issues that HP refused to address, or redress once they knew about it. So unless this one was designed to shut down every 10 minutes, it wasn't very OK at what it was designed for. I have to have a fan tray under it constantly when using it... which is loud. I'd be very glad to have a Bentley, but I wouldn't be pissed off if someone hated their's because it was always breaking down.

Took him 4 months to think that up. In that time, I found out that two of my friends have this model laptop, and both report that they have worked fine since purchase, and one is going to give his to me when he buys a new one after Christmas, in exchange for a DVD player and a case of not very expensive wine.

1280x800 is the resolution of my laptop and I'm happy with it. I have had overheating issues on one occasion but that was mitigated with a little common sense (not resting it on upholstery when using it for Minecraft being a good start).

That said my laptop isn't an HP. Don't have personal experience with them.

Nonetheless It's a tad sad when you think about it- back when laptops cost upwards of 8 thousand dollars, the feature list was so tiny, and everybody was impressed with it. Now people pay a fraction of the price for a system that is massively more powerful than those systems and don't hesitate to find as many flaws as possible.

eg. I have(or had, rather, finally failed) a Thinkpad 755 CDV. Pentium 75Mhz, 8MB of RAM, 1.5GB Hard disk, 640x480 Active Matrix screen. Cost: $8,680. My Satellite L300 cost me 700 dollars, has 512 times as much memory(4GB), a 2.00Ghz Dual Core processor, a 250GB Hard disk, and a 1280x800 display, for $699. I'm not about to complain too much about it given the massive change in what money can buy in terms of hardware.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

            RELEVANCE NOT FOUND.

In Britain, we have a slang expression: "hand shandy". I will not explain it  (unless pressed to do so). It is apt in the present case, seemingly.
