internet explorer ~ windows vista

When I click my internet explorer icon, the browser flashes across the screen and disappears, so I can't log on at all.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Are there any other issues with the system?

3) What happens with other browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc)?

4) What happens in safe mode with networking?

are you sure its not minimized in the taskbar??

I checked to see if it was minimized. When I clicked on the 'e' it did the same thing.
