Laptops typically have soldered GPU and CPU chipsets.

    So short answer: no.

The i3 has four threads. Is that not enough?

I have already taken the laptop apart to see if it was soldered and it wasn't.  I don't know if there is a compatible quad core for the motherboard, a Jinmao BA92 07336A.  I can't find details on the motherboard that would tell me if any quad cores that would fit.

There is absolutely no point in upgrading this processor (or any laptop processor.) The board, cpu and memory are all chosen to work together. You will not get a noticeable increase in performance, and any cpu will cost more than this entry level laptop is worth.

I know what I need and I do need a quad core for this laptop if I am to make use of it.  I have my reasons, I am aware that they came as a package set.  That doesn't mean they can't have the parts upgraded, now I need to know if there is a quad core I can upgrade too, that is part I can't figure out myself.  How to tell which quad core is compatible?

No quad core is compatible. You need to understand this: you cannot upgrade to a different processor family sich as i5 or i7. The best you can get is a faster i3. There is no point in doing this. If you want a quad core laptop, sell this one and buy a different one.

... How to tell which quad core is compatible?
        I agree with ST.
This is what you have now:  http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i3/Intel-Core%20i3%20Mobile%20I3-380M%20CP80617004116AH.html
If you can find something that you think is compatible, you can give it a try.

        There are 2 quad-core i7's "Other families, Nehalem micro-architecture, Socket G1".
        This is one:  http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7%20Mobile%20Extreme%20Edition%20I7-940XM%20BY80607002526AE.html

        Both memory controllers support DDR3-1066.

These cpu's will cost more than the laptop.  It's your computer & you can do whatever you want with it.

Not to forget laptops usually have just enough cooling for the chip it is supplied with. To upgrade it should increase heat output under load.

Well i for one agree with Salmon...
It's an exercise in futility and not worth the money or effort.

For a more cheaper solution, you could buy an Ultrabook with i7, and transfer data from the old PC over to the new one.
That is what I would suggest, is there a specific reason you want to keep the old laptop? Such as great graphics or something?
