You can usually print a test page and / or reconfigure your printer. Have you tried this ??

Also, whats the make and model?
11 cheers for binary !

This may be able to be resolved and you can regain the use of your printer. But then again you may not. The first thing to do is with fresh cartridges inserted using the aforementioned test process do multiple print tests. Could take up to 20 or even more. If after 20 with no improvement then your options change. By the way if you begin to see anf colours appearing that is a good sign keep up the tests. However in many instances you may NOT achieve all the primary colours. What the process is doing is trying to clear the print heads which is where the problem is.Ink has dried in them and will obstruct flow. The nozzles are minutely small. Two tips for future ink jet printer use. Always do a print task on a regular basis (once a week should suffice). Secondly if the printer is on but there is no intention to use it within  half an hour turn it off. When a printer is on the print heads are not in the park position (as they are in the off position) and therefore are not protected as well from evaporation as they would be in the off position. Some ink jets can use head cleaner solutions to assist in opening heads but not all do. Some ink suppliers can restore heads with cartridges with the cleaner in them instead of the ink and sometimes can flush the heads. However again not all ink jet printers can use this process.Patience is a requirement here. Good luck, truenorth
P.S. Actually before doing the print test procedure do at least 7 head cleanings then try a test print.
