    External Hard Drive Problem
    « on: September 09, 2012, 10:28:09 AM »
I have a 1TB external hard drive that shows that it is empty. I am using Windows 7. When I go to "Computer" it shows me the G: drive and shows that there are 50GB of data on it. When I click on the G: drive I get the message " This folder is empty". I unplugged it and plugged into a friends' computer and clicked on the G: drive and all the pics and music popped up with no problem. When I put it back on my computer I had the same problem. I am not very computer knowledgeable, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening wnyb and welcome to CH

This sounds like it is a permission / security issue.

When the ext drive is plugged in and what ever the driver letter (G:) maybe like you said
    Try this:

        Right click on the drive.
        Select "Properties".
        Go to the "Security" tab.
Check that "Users" (or your user account) has "List folder contents" selected.

    Or try this

Another possibility is that they have been marked as "Hidden".

    Try this:

        Open the "Start Menu"
Type "folder" in the search box.
Choose "Show hidden files and folders" from the list (if it appears).
Check that "Show hidden files, folders and drives" is selected.
You could also turn off "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".

Hope this helps. Please let let us know how you make out. Mike
