    random restarts. need some help.
    « on: September 19, 2012, 06:53:27 PM »
I built a gaming computer about a month ago and it worked great for a couple weeks then began to shutoff and restart randomly. The screen goes black then says "going to sleep" after that it restarts and says windows did not shutoff properly. I need to get this fixed but can not figure out the problem. I have tried a restore and checked the ram.

    Here's the hardware:
    Msi 990 fxa motherboard
    Amd phenom 2 quad processor
    Gtx 550 ti video card
    G skill 2x4gb ram
    Raidmax 630w psu
    Windows 7 64 bit os

Any other information needed just ask. I would appreciate any help

I would turn off all power saving features in Control Panel since the message references that...

That being said the most common cause for random shutdowns/restarts is usually heat related....

DLoad and install SpeedFan and monitor your Temps both at idle and under load IE gaming.
Compare the results against your hardware's listed specs for normal.

I will try turning off the power saving settings but I forgot to mention that I'm sure its not a heat issue as sometimes it happens before startup is complete. Other times I can play games for hours until it does it.

Alright I installed speed fan and like I said its is not heat related. I also turned off all power saving settings as well as restart from  :'(system failure. It continues to restart. Any other ideas?

You could try checking all the cable connections in the computer, if something came loose and is causing a voltage drop then that could cause a restart. I would take out all the hardware except for the motherboard. Keep adding one component at a time until you can isolate the problem.

Do you have an onboard graphics for testing?

Does it happen in safe mode?

I have tried checking the cables and other connections those all seem to be fine. No onboard graphics just the gtx 550 ti video card. Ill try it in safe mode in a bit and let you know

As of now I am unable to get through start up before it restarts so I Can't try safe mode. But my guess is it won't work on safe mode either it shuts off in start up

If it restarts that quickly it's possible one or more of the fans are not operating...

OK...check any power saving settings...set the BIOS back to default settings and press F10 to "save changes and exit"...

Have you swapped power supplies? I have had some newer power supplies that claim they are 600 watts really only be capable of 400 watts. Newegg has about 160 reviews pointing to issues with this power supply at 3 stars or less 95 of which are 1 star. Lots of complaints about capacitors etc failing.
