Shortcut from *censored*
« on: October 02, 2005, 01:37:21 AM »
Hello everyone and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. I have a shortcut on my desktop that is clearly damaged, it's for 6 months free of AOL (spare me the AOL sucks jokes  ;D) Anyhow it appears as the typical 'white page with a window inside' icon, and I have tried everything imaginable from a Windows standpoint to remove it. Right clicking on the icon on the desktop, in 'run C:', in windows explorer, I even downloaded a trial program that is supposed to be able to fix broken shortcuts but no luck. The only options that appear when right clicking are 'Open, Explore, and Create Shortcut'  I am thinking my last option is to somehow remove it from MS-Dos? Any guidance would be absolutely fantastic, thanks!  :-*

Is there anything in add/remove programs or the menu system to uninstall?

What happens if you select the explore option? Does it lead to anything?

There is nothing in the Add/Remove Programs for AOL, or anything related to AOL. When I open 'Explore' it simply opens a windowed version of the desktop including its self in the icons (cute huh?) I have tried dragging it to the recycle bin and it will highlight the bin like it's going to drop, but then it remains outside the bin next to the bin. Have not tried safe mode, but that's something I had not thought of  :-[

Well I tried safe mode and the icon behaves in the same way. I'm just at a loss for words  >:(  Does anyone think MS-Dos would be a successful way?

DOS and WIndows XP are two different animals and i do not think there is a DOS solution for this. It is somewhere in your Windows setup.....somewhere......

Sounds like its not a 'real' shortcut but you can check.  If you open up My Computer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<your user>\Desktop folder, do you see the SCFH listed in there anywhere?  Try deleting the shortcut from the folder if it exists.

If it's not there then perhaps try using the built-in 'Clean Desktop' thingy.  I don't know how smart it is but you can try it.  Go to control panel, find the Display item and open it.  You should see a Display Properties window, click on the Desktop tab.  Click on the Customize Desktop button, then click on 'Clean Desktop Now'.  You will be brought to a wizard that will list the shortcuts on your desktop and when you last used them.  Hopefully the SCFH shows up there and you can put a check next to it and clean it up.

If that doesn't work, then its an icon that is placed there through the registry.  There is one place I know about (and probably a zillion more that I don't) that can do this, and you have to use the registry editor to get there.  You don't have to edit anything, though.

So if you're comfortable using the registry editor, you can try this out:  Open up the registry editor (start->run, type: regedit), then open up the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.  Navigate to: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Open that key up and you will see a small list of numbers in brackets, click on each one of them.  As you click on each one, in the right pane, you will see text describing what each of those are.  One of them should be the Recycle Bin.  Hopefully one of them is also the shortcut from *censored*.

Have a look here for the same problem.  MoveOnBoot might be the answer.

CarbonToast has earned his wings. This gives you one free pass from the Sin Bin if you end up in there. ::) ::)

            Which one was the winner?

The registry one or the folder one.
