I am downloading a series of video files wmv.z01 ....z02, etc plus a zip file and need advice on suitable extraction tools.software further any tips and pointers on what to look out for would be useful ?

I don't want to spend money on buying software so freeware sources would also help?

My system runs windows XP home edition workbook 3, I already have some freeware extraction programs such as HJspliter,; Izarc; Peazip & one other which didn't seems to work. I just need to know the procedure for dealing with such files and how to put them back together, please?

patio, do you realize exactly how un-helpful your answer was?

I also have a wmv.z01 along with a wmv.zip on my PC.  I use 7-zip all the time to extract zip and rar files, but I have no idea how to use 7-zip to extract Den4Hope's (or my) files.  If you actually know HOW to do it, please provide details.

I'm not scarfing - I'm a retired computer consultant who helps low income people in my area with computer difficulties.  I do it for free, unless I need to buy parts.  This particular problem was brought to me, and I could find no way to use the free 7Zip to extract the video.

No, I'm not a scarfer, but you are an jerk.  Apparently a self-righteous jerk.

Please don't post like that. Especially not to Patio.

Well i have no idea why 7Zip would not work on them i've never encountered issues with that app.

Where are these zip files from and what do they contain ? ?

I have use 7zip plenty of times with split archives that have a base .zip file and then .z01 to zNN part files. You just point 7zip at the .zip and as long as the archive was correctly created, is not corrupt, and there are no missing part files, 7zip correctly processes the extraction. Of course, a split archive downloaded from e.g. Usenet can be damaged or faulty in some way.

Of course, I don't download doubtful video files, but if I did, I would steer clear of one in wmv format. They are sometimes maliciously crafted to trap newbies, e.g. by making them download "codec packs" full of malware, or of poor quality.

What i find particular odious and offensive is how the O/P states patio's offer of a specific program (7zip) was so "unhelpful". When in fact up to his post AFTER the suggestion was made it is HIS first reference to the program. Den4Hope, you can get more help if you use kinder words.

The responses your got were from the best volunteers on this forum.

And nobody can guess what your are doing with the video files. Only a few sites have free legal videos your can download.  And they do not require any special tools to build the files.

Yes, some files are sent in little parts that later are put together, but it is an automatic process. So nobody here understands what your are doing.

This site, Computer Hope, has excellent tutorials on a wide variety of topics, including some we seldom tak about.

Maybe what you want is found here:
          http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/b/bittoren.htm
A Bit Torrent gathers files from different places and puts together automatically.

I sure hope YOU know what that sentence means because it sounds like gibberish to me.  What I find odious is the knee-jerk kick to the groin response when ever anyone has the gall to suggest that the forum might have not done the best job when replying to a poster.

Clairvoyance?  I'd have to be clairvoyant to know what you're talking about.

Are you talking about me?  Because when I had the effrontery to suggest patio's answer was less than helpful he accused me of video piracy.

Look, I had a woman come to me because she couldn't figure our how to extract these files.  She doesn't have the resources for paid tools, and she asked me if 7Zip would work.  I knew I'd had problems before with exactly the same sort of zip structure, so I Googled.

Right at the top of the list of results was the posting from Den4Hope.  I opened it, expecting the trick to using 7Zip for wmv.zip, wmv.z01, etc files would be revealed.  Instead I saw 'I use and recommend 7Zip' as an answer.  If it doesn't work - and it doesn't (I've since seen dozens of other postings on other forums where people were unable to use 7Zip for these files - I've yet to see a solution) then it's really not very helpful, is it?  Where clairvoyance fits into all this is a mystery.  But go ahead, shoot the messenger if it makes you feel better about yourselves.

I have no idea of the content of these files - it's just none of my business, and why that would matter to anyone here is an absolute mystery.  I was asked to extract some files that the user was not able to do on her own.  Because of the relatively small size and and there only being a wmv.z01 and a wmv.zip it's not like it's a pirated copy of Titanic.

When I right click on the wmv.zip and select extract files I get a msg that it cannot be opened as an archive.

When I eight click the same file and select open with winrar I get a page that lists the (unextracted file).  If I select it and click extract at the top of the page, I get the extracted file.  However it says that this is a trial version of Winrar.

This is not the first time I've had this exact problem.  I have NEVER gotten 7Zip to work on anything but multi part rar or stand alone zip files.  .Zip with the z01s and z02s have never extracted for me using 7Zip, and since the trial version of WinRar works, I assume it's either something I'm doing wrong with 7Zip, or it simply doesn't handle those kinds of files.

I have done some tests, and subsequently some research. 7zip does not handle multipart zip files created by other compression utilities including WinZip. I apologise for misleading people by saying anything different.

7-Zip simply cannot open split Zip files created by other compression utilities. I tried renaming the Zip files to the naming standard used by 7-Zip, but it would not open the Zip file (it thought there was a Zip file in the Zip file, and after extracting that the resultant Zip file could not be opened). I also tried to get 7-Zip to open a split Zip file created using the latest version of WinZip (using the old compression standard, not their new one) and it couldn't open that one either.

              Quote
There are many types of multi-part archives: ZIP, RAR, CAB. I don't like ZIP's multi-part standard by some reasons.
I don't plan to support it near future.

Multipart ZIP archives created by the official WinZIP archiver give "bad archive format" errors with a number of the free extraction programs I have tried, which are, like 7zip, created by 'one-man-bands'.

I suspect that this may be connected with the way the simpler freeware programs create and handle their own multipart archives. Many of them, in effect, create one large zip file and split it into blocks at the final writing stage. Both Winzip and WinRAR do things differently and use, I suspect, proprietary algorithms and methods not available to the "working from home" freeware writers. I work in a sensitive finance department and for compression we are only allowed to use WinZip with 256 bit encryption for files to be transmitted, even across our own secure intranet.

Although i don't have any native zipped files to test on you may want to try WinZip...as i said it's worth a shot.

WinRAR would be another alternative to try as well.
              Both have a Free/trial version.

Thank you for your research and your reporting.

I actually found a source forge forum and then spent 15 minutes trying to register.  When I finally found it and entered my information, I never got a confirmation email.  So I emailed them, explaining the multi part archive problem and the registration issues.

I never got a response.   But thank you again, for yours.  I was beginning to feel like the kid who knows the next door neighbor is an alien, but nobody will believe me.  Good 'digging' on your part.  I'm disappointed I never found the information myself.

As I already mentioned, I have, ultimately, managed to extract the files using the trial version of WinRar.  I have been told that the trial version of WinZip only lasts for so long before it ceases to work, and I assume the same thing about WinRar.  I was merely looking for a free alternative I could suggest, and I assumed 7Zip was it.  Lesson learned, and thanks for posting.

I strongly suspect that the WinZip and WinRAR multipart archive formats are exclusive to them, and are going to stay that way, for fairly obvious commercial reasons.

WinRAR's "evaluation period" never actually runs out.

7-Zip- the program- is perhaps the Archiving program I dislike the most. I consider it more a "sample" of how to use the 7-zip libraries, rather than a application in and of itself- and for that purpose it works well.

Personally I use PowerArchiver, which has worked quite well for me. Not free anymore, though. (It has no trouble opening multi-part zip and RAR files from WinRAR and WinZip).

Correct on WinRar...it just shows nag screens without registrgation...
WinZip i'm not sure of but the last time i took it around the block i believe it stops approx. 1/2 of the features of the Full ver.
At any rate glad you found a solution .
