    I need driver help please!
    « on: November 18, 2012, 01:43:19 PM »
    I have a Toshiba, Qosmio X305Q705
Recently I had a virus. I struggled clearing it out and gave up after it got to where I couldn't boot in safe mode anymore.
I re-installed Windows from recovery disk.
Everything loaded, Windows loaded fine and is working.

     Vista Home Premium
     Service Pack 1
All the drivers loaded fine except for the wireless driver.  It was there, but shows the yellow warning sign in device manager.
     I uninstalled it.
This computer has not been online  since the install.
I went on line with another computer, to Toshiba's website.   In the driver download section I put in my laptop model to search the available drivers.
There are 3 different ones that they say could work. I have installed each one and none of them install without the yellow warning, and I can't get my wireless working.
When I click on the driver open teh properties window it says:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
      thx

Many WLAN devices rely on the chipset driver to work properly...
Re-install the MBoard chipset driver...re-boot and then try the wireless drivers again...

the only one I see is for Windows 7.
So how do I find this chipset driver?

I have a question or two.

I found instructions that say look in the registry?
I did regedit and went to see the driver?

         HKEY-LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\INFINST
Look at teh line with Install.  on the right is says, success.
they said that means it installed correctly?????

It says its version is, 8.7.0.1007
I still don't understand how to find it on line, and how to know if the one that's already there, is good or bad.

Were you advised on other forums to check on the registry? If you were able to reinstall your Vista OS, it should follow the chipset driver followed by any other flags or exclamation showing from the device manager. Look for the exact Vista drivers for your laptop >Here< and use the drop down box to look for chipset and wifi (Atheros or Intel) driver for Vista.

That is your Intel chipset current driver version according to the download page.

Ye[p, been there and loaded it.
           Nothing changed.
The wireless adapter is the only thing in the device manager with the exclamation point warning.

I didn't change anything in the registry, just looked.

Now I'm starting to remember, I think this same thing happened a few months ago.
I  had installed a new hard drive and loaded the OS from the same recovery disk set, and the wireless wouldn't work.
I had someone look at it and he said it needed  "Intel Rapid Storage Technology".

He put that in it and I believe that's what got the wireless to work.
I found it on the net and loaded the two files but I didn't understand all of the set up instructions.
So maybe I'm close?  But still not working.

Remember this computer still has not been on line and only has service pack 1, and no updates.  Maybe it needs all the updates?
I don't have a convenient wire connection at home.
Should I go ahead and hook it up on the wire and get all the updates?

If these don't fix it, the device is damaged or turned off.

Are you suggesting that the switch for my wireless is bad or off?
It's in the on position and was working before I ran the recovery disk.

                Something to note,
Near the end of the install, (I'm guessing where it installs all the drivers) I got a message that said:

Windows requires a digitally signed driver.
A recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature. The driver is unavailable and the program that uses it might not work correctly.
Uninstall the program or device that uses this driver and check the publishers support site to get a signed driver.
               Driver:
             Intel Wireless WiFi Link Driver
             Service Intel Wireless Link Adapter
Driver for Windows Vista 64 Bit
             ...
Well this was still with the disk in and loading drivers. There was no programs running.
I did delete the WiFi link 5100 AGN in the device manager and loaded another one, deleted it and loaded another one.
             3 Times!

Did you see my reference to the Rapid Storage thing?
Do you think it's not related?

            I have a Toshiba, Qosmio X305Q705...

Drivers may or may not be digital signed, doesn't matter.

Looks like your WiFi is Atheros which is the one of the more popular.

            Wireless LAN Card Check
                Run device manager.
If any of the following adapters are found under "Network adapters", apply Driver: 7.7.0.288.0. If none of the adapters are found, then this driver is not for your computer.
                    Atheros AR9280 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9281 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9283 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter

            Driver Version Verification
                Run Device Manager.
Open properties of the appropriate Atheros Wireless "Network adapter".
                    Atheros AR9280 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9281 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9283 Wireless Network Adapter
                    Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
Verify that the Driver Version is 7.7.0.288.
Click Driver Details... in the Driver tab.
                Select athr.sys or athrx.sys.
Verify that the File version is 7.7.0.288.

Rapid Storage has nothing to do with WiFi.

There are only 2  Intel Wifi driver for Vista and Vista/Win 7 64 bit
            Intel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows Vista / 7 (64bit)(v12.4.0.21.1; 05-15-2009; 5.38M)
Intel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows Vista(v12.0.0.73.0; 06-19-2008; 3.91M)
Its either you run the exe or provide the path of the downloaded driver thru the device manager, hardware wizard prompt of the adapter. Unless its faulty which were hoping its not.

              I'm not sure I understand.
I know how to click on the drivers and they automatically load, but I haven't done it any other way.
What is it that would be faulty?

When I click on Network adapters, two things are listed.

                1.  Intel (R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN   (which is the wireless  driver I downloaded right?) It has the exclamation point.
                  it's the 12.4.0.21 driver.

                2. Realtek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P)...   (which is for the ethernet cable connection right?)
So how do I find out if I have this Altheros device?

                  Success!
I wrongly installed the Atheros thing and immediately uninstalled it.
I re- downloaded the Intel driver and installed it.
this time it worked.  I didn't do anything different, but I'll accept getting lucky anytime if it works.
                    Thank You for your help.
                   Again!
