Java Applets are rather 1990's anyway... And they weren't very good then, either.

(Basically, why would somebody have Java enabled in the browser to begin with?)

Many years ago I use Java in a few of my eBay pages because I was too lazy to use anything else. But it was not  security problem back them. The java code was actually in my website, the the eBay page. I know, that sounds convoluted. But it worked. Which was  all I wanted.

Anyway, BC is right on. Java is so 1990 like.  OK. 1995.

At JavaOne 2011, Oracle discussed features they hope to have in Java 9, including better support for multi-gigabyte heaps, better native code integration, and a self-tuning JVM.

Stuff like this is also not helped by the rampant confusion between Java and Javascript. I can imagine a lot of people disabled "Java" by disabling Javascript.
