    Screen is stretched...
    « on: January 18, 2013, 08:24:03 PM »
I cut my computer off and when I turned it on the next day, the items on the screen look wider.  I have not changed anything. I went to play Hearts and when I opened games, all the cards are much shorter and fatter.  The icons on the task bar are fatter, on the web things look fatter. I tried changing resolution (is at 1280 x 1024) and that didn't help.  I've got Vista, home edition, not premier home ed.  I tried adjusting the monitor (widescreen monitor) and anything else I could think of, which is not much, but nothing works.  I did have to move the screen to the left with the monitor buttons because the screen wouldn't even show the x at the top right corner, or the scroll down bar.  I am one of those people in my early 60's, have had a computer for 12 years, and still "don't get it".  So if you think you can help me, could you try to make the answer easy for me to understand?  I'd appreciate any help you can offer as I don't like it like this.  I just now glanced at the top of the page and the back button is way fatter also and there seems to be two slight lines running down the left edge of it to the bottom of the page. They are very faint, hardly see them, but they are there.  I just don't understand how it could have changed from just turning it off and back on the next day.  It has never done this before.

My computer was built for me by a local computer repairman.  It has no brand name or model.

Tried changing the DPI, everything is still stretched out, only the letters are smaller.

Restart the computer and tap the F8 key repeatedly as it's starting back up. This will open the Andvanced startup screen. At that screen highlight Last Known Good Configuration and press enter.

Thanks JJ 3000...Didn't work, still the stretched out screen.  This is just so confusing, no explanation of why it changed but hopefully will find something to put it back right.

1024 x 768 didn't do it.  That only made it worse.  However, I did discover something else, but I don't know how to fix that either.  My hubby downloaded a free screensaver that was marine animals.  Everytime that was on and we came to use the computer, when we moved the mouse, all the lettering was big, the screen would go black for a second, and the normal desktop would be there.  Since I thought that might be the problem, I uninstalled it.  I went back to the website and they stated they put a special installer on your computer to make it easier to install other things. To remove this, they say go to Start, then RegEdit and find: HKEY_Local_Machine/software/Freeze.com/Installerkey

Then press the delete key and then exit registry editor.

Well, I went to RegEdit and I did see HKEY_Local_Machine, but that's all I saw.  They did state you should backup your registry before you do this (?) and since I didn't see anything that said software/freeze...etc...I have done nothing.  Could this be the problem?  I know someone with more knowledge about computers knows what to do, but it's not me.  Can you help?  Thanks in advance!

What particular screensaver? It must be set as a wallpaper/desktop background? Check the desktop background settings. Right-click on a blank space in your desktop then choose Personalization. Click Desktop Background then click Picture position options. Go back to Personalization and disable also the Screensaver being mentioned and hit Apply.

Thanks Jason, I did that and no place does it show Screensavers, which is the program downloaded.  I have already uninstalled it, however, I still cannot get the "stretching" out of my desktop.  Everything still looks elongated.  I did change the display to 1280 x 960 which helped a little, but changing it even more made it worse, so I left it there.

This morning when I turned my computer, on the desktop was black.  I got my pictures back on it but I am having difficulty with various things. I ran a virus scan, that came back okay, so I plugged in my external hard drive to do a backup.  When it finished, it said backup completed but with errors.  As I as looking around trying to figure this machine's problem, Windows tells me my NVIDIA GE Force 6100 has stopped working.  A screen popped up that said:  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close and notify if a solution is available.  I was never notified.  Then somewhere else I was looking (don't ask, I don't remember where all I've looked on this thing) said:  Faulting applications rundll32.exe version 6.0.6000.16386....  and another that said Fault bracket 2836258540, type 1&#oood; Event name APP CRASH.  Does any of this mean anything to anyone that could explain to me what's going on?  Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.  I'm trying to get this worked out on my own, if possible, because I have large medical bills and don't want to spent the money on repairs.  (The large medical bills will continue for a while, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2-1/2 years ago, but am fighting the good fight and so far I am cancer free!  Yeah!!!)  Thanks to anyone in advance.

                With regards to other errors,
Download MiniToolBox and select all options.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

I tried to install drivers from NVIDIA.  This was the message:  NVIDIA Installer cannot continue.  This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

1024 x 768 didn't do it.  That only made it worse.
What make and model monitor do you have?  What is the "native" resolution for it?  This is usually the maximum resolution setting and it's a specification always stated by sellers of monitors.

I did discover something else, but I don't know how to fix that either.

Making changes to the registry can be a risky business, especially for those unfamiliar with it and with making any changes to it.  In this case, I suggest downloading and installing CCleaner and running its Registry cleaner and looking at what it finds to see whether it found any entries related to the screensaver or that "special installer" that came with it.  If CCleaner does show such entries, you can have it remove them, or just have CCleaner remove all items found by its Registry cleaner.  CCleaner will prompt you to backup the registry before making the changes and you should do so by responding to CCleaner's prompting.

I tried to install drivers from NVIDIA.  This was the message:  NVIDIA Installer cannot continue.  This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.  ...

My monitor is a Westinghouse 22", model LCM-22w3.  The resolution that is working best right now is 1280 x 960.  The highest it will go is 1280 x 1024.  However, the book says it should be set at 1680 x 1050.  I don't have that high of a number on my display settings.

I am not sure what I tried to download at NVIDIA at this point.  I know I only clicked on anything that said 6100.  I've been trying so much stuff to get this working correctly again, I'm beginning to get frustrated enough to go ahead and find the money to get someone to look at it.  I will do the CCleaner first, though.  And the HWInfo also.  Thanks!!!!

While you're taking steps, as suggested in previous posts, to investigate and resolve the issue, I can suggest a resolution setting that should give you a display with less distortion.  I see on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824255002 that the recommended resolution setting for your monitor is, indeed, 1680 x 1050.  Here's a key point in understanding resolution settings; its called "aspect ratio".  If you divide 1680 by 1050, the result is 1.6, or the ratio of width to height, in pixels.  So, if you have a setting that provides an aspect ratio of 1.6, you have a setting that does not cause text and graphics to look distorted.  This is why a setting of 1024 x 768 would not achieve this goal; 1024/768 = 1.33, not 1.6.

I'm not suggesting this as a permanent solution.  If it were my computer, I would still want to get the issue resolved.  I think you'll most enjoy your monitor if you get this problem resolved and can set resolution at 1680 x 1050, as it should.  A resolution width of 1680 gives you "more real estate", or, in other words, more space to, for example, have windows for two programs up on your screen side by side.  And, LCD monitors usually display the sharpest, clearest test at the maximum resolution.

Been following this one awhile...i suspect that early on if Font size settings were changed at one point...along with registry settings  something's amiss....so who knows what it could be ...
That card supports that monitor's resolution so i'm baffled...

The other possible software that might have affected the sudden change in your computer is the Arcsoft print. Is Magentic the screensaver you were referring? http://www.magentic.com/splash/splash.aspx

Tried to download the NVIDIA link you gave me, said "failed" for updates and two other things, but the driver seems to have gotten installed.

Also Magentic screensaver referred to has been on my computer for years as my screensaver.  I downloaded a desktop "aquarium" from Free Screensavers.
