PC runs slow since April 3, 2013
« on: April 07, 2013, 08:39:09 PM »
Hello everyone! It's been a while. This time I need your help and advise. I noticed that my PC runs slow since April 3, 2013. And every time I turn on my PC, system clock and date is outdated. No icons displayed in task bar (see attached screenshot). Not sure if there is something wrong with my CMOS battery. Weather here in my country is too hot. 33-36 degrees Celsius.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 64
RAM: 3GB
GPU: 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT
HDD: 500GB Western Digital

I tried some troubleshooting but not sure if I miss something:

1. No leak capacitors in my motherboard. No other leaks.
2. Run CCleaner.
3. No malware o spyware detected using Avira, SAS, MBAB, and Adwcleaner
4. No errors detected using Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool
5. Run CHKDSK but haven't see the results because I left it and just watch tv for a while. When I came back, my PC runs smoothly again.
6. Tried to restart it several times and runs normal again.
7. Tried also to reboot and runs normal too. System clock/date are now updated. Task bar now shows the icons.

How would I know if CMOS battery is defective?
Did I miss something?
Any recommendations or advise that may help resolved the issue?

Thanks in advance! :)

If the clock keeps going out of whack, it's likely the battery.

It only costs a couple of dollars. It wouldn't hurt to get it replaced.

I tried to turn on again my PC. Clock keeps going out of whack. See attached photo of CMOS Checksum Bad.

Will try this weekend to follow this http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000237.htm and replace my CMOS Battery as well.

Thanks!

That's a common error message and most likely confirms it is in fact the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032...available everywhere including WallyWorld.

P.S. Make sure everything is unplugged when replacing it...and you will need to set the correct time and date once more.

I agree with patio it's definitely the battery, i had this problem in my own experience with my old HP computer and few others.
You can buy one from here http://www.priorityelectronics.com/cmos-batteries.htm i think they should say "cost for quality" because week ago i bought one and day later i got it, and it worked perfectly.

Definitely the battery... This exact same thing happened to me.
Be thankful it's nothing more sinister....... or expensive.

Anyone who wants to be his/her own computer tech, should own a small, inexpensive Digital Volt Meter.
When you take out a CR2032 battery and check it with a volt meter, it must show at least 3.0vdc, or it's failing and should be immediately replaced.

Also, if a PC comes into my shop, and it's over three years old, it just automatically gets a new CMOS battery. I buy those little batteries ten at a time.
Replacing a battery with a few years age on it, is a great way to avoid a problem in the next year or so.

      Good Luck!
