Dealing with Malware (Having Followed the Guide)
    « on: May 06, 2013, 05:30:18 PM »
Hi, I recently installed the 'Whitesmoke Community Toolbar' infection my accident (when trying to download speedcap). As a result I believe my computer was infected with malware. Before I go on, I must point out that my browser was not affected at all (one of the main affects I believe) and there was no evidence of any files in my programme list.

I have installed Revo and there are no new programmes.
I have installed MBAM and it reports no malicious files.
I have installed CCleaner and cleaned my computer.

I have installed AdwCleaner, and get the following:
    Code: [Select]
    # AdwCleaner v2.300 - Logfile created 05/07/2013 at 00:50:48

The infection was installed yesterday. I have been running multiple MBAM scans and Comodo Anti-Virus scans throughout all day yesterday and today. Every scan came back with nothing. However, an hour or so ago my Comodo anti-virus detected a malware file. It successfully quarantined the file and I removed it from my PC. My concern is that no such malware files were found all day yesterday and all day today (up until an hour ago). I had ran a MBAM scan shortly before my anti-virus notified me of the malware file - yet the MBAM scan always came up with nothing.

Is there still the possibility that the infection is still on my PC, and is there anything else I need to do?

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
    *************************************************************************
    Remove the Adware:
    • Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
    • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Click on Delete.
    • Confirm each time with OK
    • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
    • Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
    • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.
    ********************************************
Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.

•Temporarily disable your Antivirus and any Antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

•Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator

•The tool will open and start scanning your system.

•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

•Copy and Paste the JRT.txt log into your next message.
    ***********************************************
Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your DESKTOP
If your version of Windows defaults to you download folder you will need to copy it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with  ComboFix we need to disable it. See here for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.
    • Close any open windows and double click ComboFix.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to  have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware  removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair  mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer  have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

To confirm, I am experiencing no problems with the infected computer. There is no drop in performance and I can access the internet perfectly fine. Here is the log from AdwCleaner:

Combofix doesn't seem to be working. The files extract, I see the back-up, and then nothing.

I'm not experiencing any issues with my PC or internet. Thank you for the help you've given so far!

However, the one thing I have noticed since installing MBAM is that every now and then I get a notification saying MBAM has blocked an IP accessing my PC. For example 193.17.41.93 - which I believe is malicious. What's the deal with this? Once MBAM expires will these IPs be able to access my PC?

My current security set up includes Comodo Anti-Virus, Windows Firewall, MBAM (expires in 10 days), Spyware Blaster and WOT. Do you recommend I add/change anything?

In regards to these IPs that are trying to gain access (I've noticed about 2-3 different ones) - Is MBAM the only thing protecting my computer? How can I stop them once MBAM has expired?

The MicroSoft Safety Scanner came back clean - no malicious files were found.

A good third-party firewall will protect you against such things.

                      AVENGER

                      • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
                      • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
                      • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
                      • Click OK.
                      • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
                      • Click the Execute button.
                      • You will be asked No script has been entered.  Do you want to execute a rootkit scan only?.
                      • Click Yes.
                      • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot.  Reboot now?.
                      • Click Yes.
                      • Your PC will now be rebooted.
                      • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
                      • Please post this log in your next reply.

I've searched my computer but there is no sign of the avenger.txt file.

When my computer restarted, two new icons were added to my desktop - the Computer shortcut, and 'Username' folder shortcut.

Should I run The Avenger again?

                          These are all free Firewalls

                          Remember only install ONE firewall

                          1) Comodo Personal Firewall (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and uncheck any HopSurf and/or Ask.com options if you choose this one)
                          2) Online Armor
                          3) Agnitum Outpost
                          4) PC Tools Firewall Plus
                          5) ZoneAlarm Firewall

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Thanks Dave. I've gone with Online Armor and will see how this performs.

As for the The Avenger report not appearing on my computer - Shall I run it again? And do you recommend I do any further scans?

Final question: What are your thoughts about the upgraded version of Malwarebytes? Is it worth buying the upgrade?

I've had to uninstall OA as it interferes with my browsers. I'm going to try a different one now.

However, during initialisation of OA it came up with this - two autorun programmes that I'm unsure of. Are you able to recognise what they are?
Edit: I understand that the top one is to with Comodo, but what about the bottom one?

With the upgraded version you will receive full-time protection. I believe there are some other bells and whistles. You can check them out on the website.

I've tried the avenger again and the same thing happened (although this time no new shortcuts were created on the desktop).

Everything went as planned, but there was still no report when my computer restarted. I'm positive (I looked where you suggested in your previous post, and used "avenger" as a keyword to search my computer. No text file was found.

What do you suggest? Are there any similar scans I could do that would yield similar results?

However, the one thing I have noticed since installing MBAM is that every now and then I get a notification saying MBAM has blocked an IP accessing my PC. For example 193.17.41.93
                                Is this still happening?

Download Security Check by screen317 from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

                                Link 2

                                * Double-click Security Check.bat
                                * Follow the on-screen instructions inside of the black box.
                                * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
                                * Post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Note: If a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

I haven't noticed a notification for the last 2 days. But I can't really comment on whether it's stopped or not. I shall monitor it for the next few days and make a note of any IPs Malwarebytes blocks (if there are any). I have 7 days left on the trial, and currently considering upgrading just before it expires.

MBAM has just notified me that it has blocked the same IP: 193.17.41.93.

Obviously the malicious IPs are still trying to gain access. What do you suggest I do? And is MBAM blocking the IPs the reason for my Comodo Firewall not notifying me?

No threats found in the TDSSKiller scan.

                                        Any idea on this question?

Yes, MBAM is blocking them first otherwise, your Firewall would block them.
Could you please try to run ComboFix again. If it won't work, try doing it in Safe Mode.

This is what I got when ComboFix was extracting files. When I clicked on retry the same message came up, and when I clicked on ignore I got another similar message about something else.

SUPERAntiSpyware was different to how you described it in your instructions.

16 tracking cookies were detected. Once the scan was finished, it gave me the option to view the scan log (below) and remove detected threats. Having ensured everything was checked, I removed the threats from my computer. It didn't prompt me to reboot my computer; after the threats were removed, it just went back to the "home" screen.

Once on the home screen, I checked the "Manage Quarantine" section, where the following were listed. I assume I should just check all 4 and delete?

                                            Here's the log:

I tried running the online scan but it didn't work. I downloaded the scanner, clicked 'yes' to the security warning - but nothing happened afterwards. No alert from my antivirus, so I don't think that was blocking it. Do you know of any reason why this is the case?

This is the first time I've tried this scanner. I'll have to test it to see what's happening.

Okay, I deleted the 4 files. I've also ran a second scan (this is ~2 hours after the first) and a few more adware tracking cookies were found. I've deleted these as well. Does this mean these files were added to my computer in the 2 hours between doing the two scans? 2 of the newly found files were labelled "imrworldwide.com" - is this particularly malicious? I also haven't visited this site, so I'm guessing it's very common on a lot of other websites?

Have you noticed any activity from MBAM?
No activity - MBAM scans continue to come back with no threats found, and I haven't received any notifications of malicious IPs trying to gain access. I think this is due to the uninstalling (and then reinstalling) of Google Chrome. Once I did this, I haven't received any further notifications from MBAM. I will continue to monitor this and update you in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, are there any further checks I should be carrying out?

I run daily anti-virus and MBAM scans. Out of all the various different scans I've done since first starting this thread, which (if any) do you recommend I do at least once a day?

I've just ran another scan and 13 new threats have popped up - all similar tracking cookies to the ones I've already deleted.

Why do they keep coming back, and how can I stop this happening?

                                                    What browser are you using?
I use Google Chrome and Firefox. I'd use Firefox for everything, but I prefer Chrome's layout + some sites run slowly on Firefox, but fine on Chrome.

Is the issue using Google Chrome?

That should do it. Let's do some cleanup in the meantime.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
                                                      Click Disk Cleanup from there.

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
