Windows 98 Reinstall
« on: October 15, 2005, 10:26:41 AM »
I recently had to reinstall Windows 98 due to a virus on my hard drive. Afer doing so, the floppy drive does not seem to working correctly. I insert a floppy and it just spins for a while and then it pops up that the disk is not formatted, do I want to format it? I tried formatting from the dos prompt, but it still will not work. Where can I go from here?

If it is an old machine the floppy may be kaput. Open the case and make sure the data cable is firmly attached (small flat grey cable) Try several disks then. If it can't read any of them, it's your drive.

Sometimes this problem can be resolved by going into the BIOS and enabling detect floppy on boot. This is usually turned off by default. Also check in BIOS that the floppy is set properly (1.44)
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

Thanks, I have tried looking into the BIOS. It is already enabled and set properly. I believe that the machine is at least five years old. I checked the cables and still the same result. I think that it is kaput.
