    Blue Screen of Death BSOD
    « on: September 03, 2013, 04:53:33 PM »
Computer turns off and reboots itself.  Sometimes i get the BSOD but sometimes i don't.  searched here and turned off something that allowed the bsod to stay so i could write it down.  Does it anytime. Finally installed my purchased version of SUPERantispyware and it helped alot.  Just updated all XP updates  windows xp pro 3

Blue Screen:   A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time = NO
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space = I have something like 55gb of 75gb harddrive
If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates.  tech help here has helped me update my video and system drivers.  Try changing video adapters.
Check for any FIOS updates.  Disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing = could not find them.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart, press F8 to select advanced Startu options, select Safe Mode.

    Technical Information:

    ***  STOP:  0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBD1E41DD, 0xB2BC9AB4, 0x00000000)
    *** nv4_disp.dll - Address BD1E41DD base at BD012000, Datestamp 510e1eee

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your sytem administrator or technical support group for further assistance.
    please please be very detailed

The error above points to your Nvidia driver. Have you recently updated it? If so, roll it back. If not, update it now. Also, please do the following:

    Download BlueScreenView:
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

The most common causes for the errors you are getting are:

A bad block in the pagefile
      A boot sector virus
A bad or poorly seated video card
      Bad ram

      You can do the following:

      1) Please follow the instructions in the following link and post your logs in the thread you create (NOT in this thread):
http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html (and mention that a staff member suggested you may have a boot sector virus)

      2) Set the pagefile to "no pagefile". Open a  ommand prompt window and type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot. After checkdisk completes and you are back in the shell, re-enable the pagefile set to "system managed".

      3) download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

      4) Check to make sure the display adapter is properly seated. If the bsod's continue after doing all of the above, you can try a different display adapter.

sorry, but i went to your first link, i could not see anywhere, except options to PM, post etc.  do you want me to PM Evilfantasy?  I do not see a reply option :) ty just before i got here i was using IE and it kept NOT RESPONDING, not new but worse.  But the games i play have caused the BSOD lately.

Your first link took me to and i downloaded AdwCleaner but i could not find Delete??(per instructions) on the page. sry While trying to install -  i can decline the first three offers of:  Top Arcade Hits, MyPCBackup and DealPly but the next one is to install the - Tuvaro Toolbar  = including Value Apps (recommended)  and says:  Value Apps selects the best daily apps based on your browsing information and says: Set my default search and home page to Conduit Search and install Search Protect.  two choices, Express Installation or Custom Installation.  Which one should i select please.  I do not want any toolbars, etc.  but if you say okay then of course I will.  This is CNET's Download.  I have download CCleaner and did what i was told.  I have the AdwCleaner icon on my desktop, but was not given the choice to do that is was done automatically upon download.  Should i install or do i have to install any of them to get AdwCleaner. ty  sorry if this is not clear.

You need to follow instructions. I clearly asked you no fewer than three times in this thread to post that information int he malware section of this forum.

I'll move the entire thread. From now on, please pay attention and follow instructions. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

                  1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
                  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
                  3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
                  4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
                  5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
                  6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
                  7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

                  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Please try to run Security Check and post the log.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your DESKTOP
If your version of Windows defaults to you download folder you will need to copy it to your desktop.

                            Link 1
                            Link 2
                            Link 3

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with  ComboFix we need to disable it. See here for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.
                            • Close any open windows and double click ComboFix.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to  have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware  removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair  mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer  have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

I do not get a log from ComboFix  Should i defag.  i  closed windows security's firewall and windows update before running Combofix and Security Check because it was the  first time i got a message to shut firewall and update.  I messed up on one of them, tried to close it real quick because i still had IE open and deleted the original report and the program would not generate another one. sry

                                      Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
                                      • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
                                      • Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
                                      • When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
                                      • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
                                      • If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
                                      • Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.
                                      • Copy and paste the contents of these two log files in your next reply.
Windows 8 and Windows 10 dual boot with two SSD's

Yes, turn them on and don't worry about using the computer while we're cleaning it. I just don't want you to add and new programs until we're finished.

                                              To uninstall ComboFix

                                              • Click the Start button. Click Run. For Vista: type in Run in the Start search, and click on Run in the results pane.
                                              • In the field, type in ComboFix /uninstall

(Note: Make sure there's a space between the word ComboFix and the forward-slash.)

                                              • Then, press Enter, or click OK.
                                              • This will uninstall ComboFix, delete its folders and files, hides System files and folders, and resets System Restore.
                                              *************************************
Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
                                              Click Disk Cleanup from there.

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
