    XP Admin password problem
    « on: September 11, 2013, 10:51:10 AM »
    Hello

I am trying to join my XP Pro PC to a Workgroup and need to change the computer name. It won't allow me to do this because, I think, it wants me to log-on as administrator.

If I go to the Start-Up screen and then to Ctrl + Alt + Del, type in 'Administrator' and then press OK (with no password), I get the message: 'Unable to log you on because of an account restriction'.

What restriction could that be, please? I thought you could log on in XP as an Administrator without a password (unless I have set one in the past which I doubt?).

How do I resolve this question, please?

    Many thanks.

Try safe mode admin access, then promote your user account to admin privileges and log off admin in safe mode and you should be able to join as yourself.

I tried it without using an admin password and it allowed me to this time! It is not part of my workgroup. Surprisingly, the XP computer is wireless.

I just basically did this (ignoring the references to Ethernet and Administrator):

        Quote
To add a wired (Ethernet) computer running Windows XP to a network

Plug the computer into a hub, switch, or router and then turn it on. (If your home has Ethernet wiring and you have a jack in the room where the computer is, you can plug the computer into the Ethernet jack instead.)

Log on to the computer as an administrator.

Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

If the workgroup name is not WORKGROUP, change the name to WORKGROUP, and then click OK.

If you had to change the workgroup name, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Restart the computer, and then continue with the steps below.

click Start, and then click My Network Places.

In the left pane, under Network Tasks, click View workgroup computers.

Choose the computer from the list that appears, and then click Connect.

        Thanks again, Dave.
