    Dual boot problem
    « on: November 15, 2013, 12:06:42 AM »
Hi, i recently installed windows xp sp3 alongside windows 8 (developer preview) . (I already had installed win8). I usb booted my pc .and installed windows xp on an unallocated space(not c; drive). after windows xp was installed, i rebooted my pc, i got surprised that dual boot menu was not visible. and the only operating system listed was win xp(when f8 key is pressed). also the c drive on which windows 8 was installed, was shown as"system"disk and other as"boot"disk (g: drive of windows xp sp3). tell me what is wrong and what to do? , also please i already have installed most programs and i'm in no mood to run"setup xp sp3"again. note; i am deaf, and sorry if my english is bad.

How can you be using windows 8 (developer preview)?  Do you mean Windows 8.1 or later?  I don't believe any developer preview will function normal since Windows 8 was officially released over a year ago.

Unfortunately, I believe you will need to reinstall Windows 8 to get out of the conundrum you now have.  And then, you will need to take a different approach to Windows XP.  If you have two hard drives, you could install Windows XP by unplugging your Win8 HDD until you're done installing XP. After that, you can use your motherboard's boot menu (often called by pressing F11 during POSTing) to choose which HDD to boot from.  Alternatively, you could install Windows XP as a virtual machine running under Windows 8, by using virtual machine software such as VMware Player or virtualbox and then installing Windows XP as virtual machine.

    soybean is right.
If you want to move on,  forget Windows XP.

Now here is some information you may want to know. For those people who have to have XP on a machine that has  Window 7 or 8 and just one hard drive there is a way that works.
XP must be installed first. Ignore people who tell you other wise. Just do it that way until you understand what is going on with he Windows boot thing. Later, ypou can make your one exception rules.

After installing both Windows XP and the next Windows OS, either 7 or 8, you must make a image backup of the partitions.

If the Windows XP install goes bad, you have to use the partition recovery to recover just the XP partition only  without changing the boot information. I stress  this only because at least  one tool I know about wants to put the boot information back  to the standard  XP boot method. That would destroy the Windows 7 or 8 boot information. And no, you can not fix it with boot.ini options.

The better alternative is to have two serrate,  physical boot devices.

Here is a phrase for a search on either Bing, Google or Yahoo.
boot XP from a flash drive
